  • Engine: ring gear tooth count

my '83 avanti is going to need a starter. can any of you tell me for sure the tooth count on the ring gear. i know chevy had 153 and 168 but have been unable to find out which, short of pulling it. i posted this on the aoai forum yesterday but no-one responded. thank you!

Can't you just use an '83 Chev. 305 or 350 whichever it is, Starter?

If the starter bolts are staggered, it's for the big flywheel.
If the starter bolts are straight across from each, it's for a small flywheel.
The blocks are drilled and tapped for both.

jerry, thanks so much for the info. my research indicated that you just can't throw on any 305/350 starter. appreciate it!
