There is no fuel sender access hole in the floor on M series trucks. Studebaker did publish information on how to make an access in a 1947 bulletin (#185). If you find a bunch of crud in the tank, you'll want to remove it for cleaning anyway.

Most tank senders vary the resistance between 0 and 100 ohms, so you could remove the wire at the dash gauge and see how many ohms it shows at different fuel levels.

Is there and easy way to get to the fuel sending unit on an M5?

I want to test and see if that is what my problem is as my fuel gauge always reads empty.
