  • Fuel System: Carb main jet commander 54?

Using the French to English translator:

I have an original Stromberg 2 cannon.
My 232 lacks power on the road, so I guess I need to increase fuel, this V8 engine has less power than my 57: hated silver hawk champion:
    The top speed is actually 70 m / h.
An idea from a friend, he assumes that the previous owner changed the jet to save fuel, in France, in the 70s, the gas was very expensive.
I read the good main jet should be from 0.049 to 4000 feet on the shop manual, I will check it out this Sunday.

My idea, because the fuel is totally different since 1954, I was wondering if someone had tested with other sprinklers the current fuel (octane), can I put 0, 051 or 0.055?
I have a Pertronix ignition coil and high voltage for synchronization of high performance ignition.

You might want to check the ignition timing and mechanical and vacuum advance. If these are off, you car will lack power on the highway.

Vous voudrez peut-être vérifier la synchronisation de l'allumage et l'avance mécanique et à vide. Si ceux-ci sont éteints, votre voiture manquera de puissance sur l'autoroute.

Thanks Roy for your traduction, i wrote in english, and my android tablet traduced in French.
My distributor and vaccum advance are perfect, check it already.
This engine was normally rebuild, i found old set rings in the car, i hope they have rebuild the heads and valves, too.
I think, this engine miss fuel, i installed an electric pump.
Mechanical and electrical fuel pump working, same top speed.

          Leaurent;
Any chance you can take the carburetor off of the Transtar or the 62 Hawk and see how the car runs. Since I am not familiar with a 54; the carburetor bases might not be the same. You don't need an air cleaner for a short test. .I realize that the engines are a different size. If anything the jets should be larger then needed.
A restriction in the air cleaner will also reduce the top speed.
Sorry I do not speak French; for the most part us Americans are language illiterate; unlike Europe

The bases on the earlier Stromberg WW carburetor used on the 232 engines are the same as the later ones used on the 259/289 engines. The difference is in the venturi size. The 232 carb has a 1 and 3/16" diameter and the later carbs have a 1 and 3/16" venturi. The carbs are interchangeable though there may be a difference in linkage connections. Bud

              Thanks for this information.
Yesterday, a friend adjusted me the both idle adjusting screws, it was his job, Ferrari, Jaguar, Porsche, Alfa Roméo specialist.
Finally, he turned inward 3/4. Normally standard setting, screws are 1, 5 out, very strange. But smooth idle was perfect, nice sound of the engine.
Last night, top speed less 60 miles/hours.
Today, top speed 50 m/h. So this afternoon, i turned out both idle adjusting screew 3/4, so now it is 1, 5 turn out.
Top speed more 78 m/h, not enough straight on road for to check really the top speed.
But the idle mixture is not good, richen mixture, black smooth out the exhaust, my garage is smooky
Sound engine is not good, not balanced.

                Problem found :
Air filter seal with a foam filter element that replaces the original which must be metallic. The engine finally ran out of air while driving.
I have an air filter oil bath, i don't understand why last owner changed the metallic element. It does not wear out, it cleans itself
