  • Engine: Fan spacer color

Is the spacer between the fan and pulley on a 1963 V8 silver, black or orange? [?]I asked this question at the last SB Intl meet and got these three answers.

My orig. 62 Gt spacer is silver(or aluminum).

The original metal color is silver when the paint is removed, and it did not stick to the smooth surface well. They painted the complete engine with the pulley and spacer on, simi-gloss Black before the Red-Orange fan blades were installed.

The only cars with original Orange spacers may have been the ones with HD (fixed blades) 6 blade fan, using different thickness spacers not the stock 4 blade fan.

I also have seen them with red or silver spacers, but not when new.

          StudeRich,
If my search is correct, the closest color for my 1963 GT Hawk's 289 four blade cooling fan is Dupli-Color Chevrolet Orange-Red Engine Enamel (DE1607).
It is the only Chevrolet Orange-Red that I can find.
The original color on the fan was orange-red before I bead blasted it. Unfortunately I did not take a picture or know to compare available color options before I bead blasted the cooling fan.
          Mark.

Yes the more Red of the Two available Duplicolor Chev. Red/Orange Colors, was used on the Dipstick Handle, Oil Caps and Fan Blades.

The Pulley, Spacer and pretty much EVERYTHING else was Semi Gloss Black, except the Pale Yellow Valve (Rocker) Covers and Auto. Trans. Dipstick.

The Trans. Filler Tube is mounted too far forward, on the wrong Head Bolt.

From my 62 GT. Of course, my fan spacer was machined down to fit the flex fan I installed.

                Topper2011,
That is the same fan that my '63 GT Hawk has. Unfortunately I bead blasted the fan before I took any pictures. So color comparison of the fan is gone. I did not realize that I had documentation of the very question I am asking about. Stupid is as stupid does. My fan spacer is original and untouched. I intend to find it and take a picture before I do anything to it. At this time, I recall that it has a silver color (is it aluminum?) and shiny finish that would make paint hard to stick to it. I presumed that it was that way from the factory but StudeRich is making a good point that it was painted black from the factory. I want to examine it carefully to see if I can find any trace black paint on it.

                StudeRich,
The top portion and cap of the original oil dipstick is the orange-red that your picture shows. It is not a lighter orange color. Other people have indicated that the Dupli-Color Chevrolet Orange (DE1620) is the correct color. The color on my original oil dipstick is like the Dupli-Color Chevrolet Orange-Red (DE1607) that is on your picture and that I am going to use on the cooling fan.
The 2 original oil filler caps were gone before I acquired this GT Hawk in Tucson, AZ in 1983. So what color they were is lost.

I acquired a copy of the original production order for this GT Hawk years ago and the engine number and Borg Warner T-10 4 speed transmission coordinate with the production order.

It drives me crazy when anyone suggest that I change the original engine with a "crate engine". I have been satisfied with the original equipment that the car came with.
