  • Electrical: Starter exchange on 1953 Commander

The starter on my 1953 Commander Starliner with original 232 V8 and automatic transmission has ceased to function and I need a quick fix as I will take the car on a trip in a couple of days. I also have a 1953 Commander Starliner with a 1955 224 V8 and a manual three speed and overdrive. Will the starter on the 224 fit on the 232 right on? If not, what modifications are needed?

ID:	1715470It should fit if you swap the "nose cone", sorry, don't know the proper name. The starters are the same but the distance they set into the bell housing is different.

You gotta change the gears, too, different no of teeth.

Not correct - any '47 to '55, 6 cylinder or V-8 with a Delco starter, uses the same starter drive gear no matter what the transmission.

It would be the 1956 to 1964 Bendix Units that have the fine teeth for the 12 Volt Starter.
