Brake Drum Question.. Stubborn 64

FIRST: I'VE READ THE FORUM ON PULLING REAR DRUMS.

That being said, I am using a three legged puller like JDP posted the picture of that he uses. I've loosened the nut so that it is 1/2 inch from the drum contact. I've shot PB Blaster around the stud in case there is rust. I've cranked the puller to where I cannot crank it any more ( I put a piece of steel between the puller and the axle shaft so as to not split it). The brake shoes are backed off. I've been whacking the daylights it with a 2lb dead blow hammer. What else can I do?

Dead blow defeats the purpose of smacking it with a BFH, you gotta surprise it. Go back out, torque it a little more, and put a 8 lb sledge against it with some force. Not like you were splitting logs, jut give it a good rap. Watch it jump.

Some times it takes several applications of torque and rap, sometimes it take waiting a few minutes to overnight.

My 3 lb BMFH has actually 'seen' a Stude rear drum or two :P

well.. one more 1/2 turn and several good whacks.. who knew owning a studey would be therapeutic too...

How are you "cranking" it? Should be hitting the mushroomed ends of the puller with that BFH. Once you've done that a number of times, wack the end of the puller hard with same BFH. Repeat.

As Dick says, once you've whacked it until it's as tight as you can get it - whack the end of the screw end smartly. Oftimes, that's when the hub lets loose with a "KAPOW!"[:0]

May not seem like it now, bit you're in a much better position than when you go to install the puller and you find you can remove the drum and hub by hand...[:0]

SUCCESS!!!! I went and bought a really BFH 12lb sledge and let her have it.. Was rather anticlimactic.. all I heard was a "tink" and it was loose. Thanks for the help guys..

whatever you do, do not succumb to the temptation to put anti-seize or grease on the taper. Just clean it up so you have clean, bright steel when you reassemble. If you grease it you run the risk of cracking the hubs and that just isn't cool. The assembly actually relies on the friction between the two tapered parts to provide the driving force to the wheels; the key is just icing for initial location.

well.. the brakes are done and back together.. i'm using a vacuum bleeder and for some reason its not sucking the fluid through. the car has hill holder. The car has all new wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brakes and hardware. I didn't do anything with the hillholder as it wasnt leaking. Is there something I'm missing?

Bob, there's a bleeder screw on top of the HH unit. you need to loosen it a bit and bleed it by easing the peddle down until no air comes out. Retighten the screw before you let back up on the peddle.
