      An electric power steering column was added to an '83 Avanti on an episode of the 'PHANTOM GARAGE'....There was no room for a normal p/s setup on the engine side of the firewall.

          Looks like hydraulic fittings on that gearbox Santosh, but anyway, the unit that was installed in the '83 Avanti had an electric assist built into the column,...the gearbox itself, (rack & pinion), was manual.

          It was demonstrated on the show how easily the front wheels could be turned with the car completely stationary, and the engine 'shut off'!

              I've been following the listing of this guy in Portugal. For a while he had around 60 kits but the number went down as they were sold. This listing from the link above showed 3 available & 3 sold so I wonder if he is going to keep making these or not. If he doesn't make any more it may be a good opportunity for Donald at Lark Works to make them, not only giving him extra work but opening the aftermarket community more to Studebakers.

                import electric power steering units like Toyota kia/Hyundai and Nissan, are good sources, you will not need a ecu as the fail safe mode is power steering . so you just need to power the unit, 3 wires power , ground and ignition on. . American and some others default to non power without a ecu. They are small and compact like the video and can be mounted anywhere. you just have to cut and modify the ends to your column. not really hard to do.

                  This is called "easy steer" from the UK. The "b" kit is the one for Studebakers, fits under the dash out of sight.

                      Quentin, I'm curious why you recommend the B kit as opposed to the more compact A kit? Any input would be much appreciated.

                        It doesn't work with column gearshift when the gear selector run internally in the column. So only automatic transmission.

                          That video is nice but if I heard correctly, the guy claims that a factory u joint can be safely used at a maximum 70 degree angle. I've never known that to be true, even the highest quality steering u joint is not supposed to used at over a 30 degree angle. The chart below shows that a u joint will experience a load increase of 30 percent at a 40 degree angle. At 70 degrees (which doesn't even show on the chart) it's probably around 70/80 percent load increase (if not more). The load doubles from 30 to 40 and that's only a 10 degree increase. It probably triples from 40 to 60??? Either way, I would never use a steering u joint at that angle.

                            From a statistical base of one person - guy I was communicating with here in Oz had fitted the B and was very pleased with it, both in the use of the product and the ease of initial installation.
                            I may go down this road when I recharge my bank account.
