  • Dale Richmond

We've just learned that Dale Richmond, long time member of SDC and the Ohio Region Chapter, passed away on November 27th 2013, a week and two years after his wife Marylyn passed away.

Dale dealt with some serious health issues over the past two years and on November 19th was taken to hospital in respiratory distress and congestive heart failure. In keeping with his wishes, his family returned him to his apartment where he could pass in peace.

A memorial celebration for his life will be held on Saturday January 4th at 4:00 pm at The Federated Church, 76 Bell Street, Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Thelma and I have long cherished the friendship of Dale and Marylyn, ever since they purchased our 1965 Studebaker Cruiser, a car that Dale had long wanted to have. His main delight in acquiring this car was that it had factory AC, which meant that Marylyn, who needed this added comfort, would be able to accompany him to Studebaker events in the car. They loved coming to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario where we often joined them for lunch there.

Dale was a fine man, Stu, for sure. He was our Ohio Region SDC newsletter editor for a good while and being a former school teacher and administrator, he could use his powers of persuasion to get me to add something to the newsletter when it might be short of an article or two any given month. He was impossible to say 'no' to--he was that nice of a guy!

He will be missed for sure.

Nine of us from the Ohio Region SDC went to Dale Richmond's memorial service this afternoon. It was moving and also funny, with talk of Dale and his love of Studebakers mentioned several times, by friends, family, and his church pastor! His granddaughter read a poem she wrote about Dale--she is a college freshman--and it mentioned his 'shiny Studebaker, red interior, no seatbelts'!.

On display were many family photos, including Dale's '65 Cruiser formerly owned by Stu Chapman; Dale's previous '64 Daytona Hardtop in Astra White, a stunning South-Bend-built, low-mileage car; his previous Green Mist '63 Daytona Wagonaire, his former Green Mist '63 Lark Regal four-door, and his former '62 Lark Deluxe two-door sedan, and some Fiats, Beetles, a Willys Aero, and a '56 Rambler before his Studebaker days.

The family seemed glad we were there. The church was a large one and nearly full.

      RIP, Dale.
