Mel Hoeft, and his wife Judy, were long time members of the Western Lake Erie Chapter of the SDC. Over the years, Mel obtained and restored several Studebaker models. I recall a '49 Commander Starlight Coupe, a '51 Commander Sedan & a '6? GT Hawk. He would display these cars at our annual Father's Day Car Show inside Woodland Mall in Bowling Green, Ohio in the 90's. Each of his cars were restored to a high level and eventually made their way to a new owner in England or Europe. Mel's latest vehicle is a '62 Champ Pick-Up that is "keeper" according to Judy Hoeft. This Champ P/U was the featured Studebaker on our Chapter's logo for hosting the 2014 Crossroads Zone Meet in Dundee, Michigan. Mel & Judy attended the majority of our monthly events, especially if they were held in the Toledo area. Mel really enjoyed desserts and would often be seen with a large piece of cake or pie in front of him after finishing lunch. He was a real soft spoken nice guy who will be missed by us all.
