  • Need to remove glass from mirror

Anyone know of something that will dissolve or soften silicone? The mirror on my 72 truck rusted inside and the head just flops around. I need to remove the glass so I can repair it. I tried soaking it in lacquer thinner, but it didn't do anything. I ran a knife blade around the edge of the glass and it looked like silicone that came out.

If you don't want to break it, try using a fine wire to saw through the silicon/adhesive. There are not many/any solvents that will attack silicone that won't ruin the mirror assembly. Heat could also screw up the base as most of them are plastic. Bob

72 Chevy truck mirror; head is stainless, base is chrome pot metal. I tried a heat gun and it didn't faze the mirror or the silicone. It has a lip around the mirror, the glass is recessed in the stainless mirror head.

Designed obsolescence. Use it and throw it away.
