Barry should come out well on the deal.

I wonder what it means for his TV and radio shows and internet activities?
Personally, I can't see a big firm like 3M keeping stuff like that. They're usually too bottom line oriented...even if they make sense.

They may keep the over the counter products but either discontinue the Mequiar's professional line in favor of 3M's own professional grade products. They could even keep the Mequiar's professional line and put the 3M name on it. They may well keep all of Mequiar's product line intact as long as the line stays profitable, but would 3M want to have products competing with their own? Once they own the product and name, they can do whatever they want with it. Just a guess on my part.

Big corporate accountants look not only at the bottom line, but have guidelines for profitability. It a product is profitable, but doesn't maintain a certain percentage of gross profit, they want it gone, regardless of how it impacts sales and customer loyalty. Accountants of that stripe would prefer to lose profits and sales to maintain a higher profit margin to report to bosses and stockholders. I worked for a company like that...that attitude made no sense to me. Corporate accountants are a funny bunch the way they look at things. GM bean counters have several times of the years tried to kill the Corvette as it didn't have high enough sales and profits to suit them.

I guess Barry is tired of pushing some of the best products in the market place and saw this as a way to permanently retire without a worry and play more with his true love Antique Cars. I personally wish him the best but know 3M will screw up his products.

I tend to agree that the majority of the purchases of speciality companies by larger corporations can result in failure. However, In a case like this, where the larger company (3M)understands the market and how the new company will fill out it's product line, I believe the results in this type of purchase usually result in a win-win for both. I use the case of S.C. Johnson buying our Ziploc and Saran businesses. They knew the markets better and have made these successful business more profitable than before and have created a couple of hundred new decent paying jobs.

Then I guess that I am one of the few that gets the reference.

Unless they open a factory in Salma, Alabama...
or on the banks of the Jordan River....

What I know is when I "go up for four days in space,
when I return..." I'm assured of great Meguiar's quality!
And I hope I didn't leave the Avvanti's lights on.
