  • Trip to Devil's Tower WY

I left home from the Fargo ND area for the trek to Rapid City SD for the Zone meet yesterday morning. Its about 570mi and seemed farther...

There is not a lot out in the SW corner of ND and NW corner of SD...

There is only 1 paved road (US-85) for many miles and few gravel ones either, other than a few ranch "driveways". From when I went to Spokane a couple years ago, most of eastern MT looks about the same.

Got to the hotel before dark fortunately. This morning, my plan was to drive to Devil's Tower in NE Wyoming. Tourist map said about 107 miles from Rapid City. Of course, I had to take the '53. Had too many seat hours in the pickup already!

I took the 2 lane roads for the most part hoping for slower traffic and better scenery. It was a beautiful clear morning, not too hot yet but with promise. Here's the view along the way.

    At last, its in sight!

I had to stop and take a picture with the '53 in it....

Went into the park and up the loop road to the visitor center. There are a couple hiking trails but I took the shorter one due to time constraints.

Not too many people visiting on a <s>Saturday</s> Friday at the end of summer. Nice and quiet.

I came, I saw. Time to head back to Rapid City.... Some great views heading E on US-14 W of Spearfish, SD before it joins I-90.

Made it back too late to go on a car museum trip, oh well. There are more events tomorrow!

I'd like to say that you ought to crop that pic of the 53 and tower to minimize the rest of the landscape and enhance the car, but then there wouldn't be as much landscape around the car. uh, what did I just say?

Thanks for sharing Jeff (great pics), tho' I hope the truck you were referring to wasn't a Stude! [:0][}]

Great pictures. They really take me back. When we lived in Belle Fourche,SD we used to drive over to Devil's Tower for the afternoon. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is in the area. There is a nice trail around the base. I was never there when there weren't people scaling the face. Did you see any mule deer in the area?

I agree it is one beautiful area to visit, and a Stude cruise would just top off the experience.

On HWY 385 (Deadwood to Custer) North of the Pactola resevoir, theres a house/garage that has a lot of Studebaker memorabilia outside, I have never stopped to see what is inside.
                Enjoy the meet.

Nice place to visit. Drove through in route home from SB, sure is a whole lotta nothing between there and Salt Lake. I enjoyed the drive.

I visit Devil's Tower a few years ago on the way back from Bonneville. It is a beautiful area and the '53 makes it look even better!

Jeff, That's a really nice photo of your
'53 in front of Devil's Tower. The tower is
like a optical illusion. It's MUCH bigger than it
                      appears.
By the way, did you have a polarizer filter over your
                      lens?

Thanks for posting those pictures Jeff. It takes me back when I was driving through Wyoming, Montana and Idaho on my way to the Spokane Meet.

Great shots, Jeff & everyone! Reminds me of the travelling lawn gnome shots, only with Studebakers.
The hugeness of it contrasted with the monotany of the landscape is dramatic. Anyone see any ufo's while there?

[:0] OMG! [:0] Tom has hit the nail on the head! Repeatedly!

We need to have a Studebaker Drivers Club Gnome Hunt! Matt (because he's young and energic and could then write about it) would take the gnome (which would be a what?) to a local club meet and everyone in North America would try to find it. What fun! What highway congestion! What gas useage! What an idea!
