    When an eight-year-old boy on a bicycle gets hit by a car while riding in the middle of the street, the blame often points directly at the youth. However, if the car in question just happens to be a quiet hybrid-electric... there just may be reason to accuse the vehicle.

    Last weekend, a youthful Owen Erickson was riding his two-wheeler with a friend when he was struck by a Toyota Prius and tossed onto the hood of the popular hybrid. Thankfully, he was unhurt. His mother, however, was quick to place some of the blame on the "totally silent" Prius, claiming her son never heard it coming. As a scapegoat, the hybrid-electric vehicle is taking more than its fair share of heat. Two years ago, we blogged about the silent danger of hybrids. Earlier this year, Maryland launched a study, and passed legislation aimed at vehicle noise levels (more specifically, the "lack of" audible decibels), citing a legitimate concern for the blind. Just last month, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives to study whether or not a "minimum sound level" needs to be established for these highly-efficient silent runners.

    We obviously haven't "heard" the end of this hybrid-electric argument as it begins to gain momentum around the country. Whether future Prius models are equipped with blaring sirens or not, we do know that Moms will still need to teach their children to not play in the middle of the street. Thanks for the tip, Tyler!

    There was a news story in the Vancouver, BC area last week on the same issue - "Killer Hybrid Cars!".[:0][}] No mention of course that when you are a pedestrian or cyclist, etc. that you should be aware of your surroundings...[B)]

    People want all the freedom in the world to do as they please, but don't ask them to be accountable.[V][xx(]

      This is a real issue for the blind. Thinking in an even more linear fashion, what happens when a drunk behind the wheel of a Prius heads down the street with lights off and silently strikes someone?

        In North Carolina, and most other places as well, the bicycle is considered to be a motor vehicle. The incident Bondo reported does not say where the cyclist was riding. He should have been on the right hand side of the land, but not in the gutter or crap that gathers at the edge of the road. If a vehicle cannot be heard it would be very difficult for a cyclist to know it was there. Granted there are special mirrors etc, designed for cyclists, but most of them are marginal at best.
        Did the kid pull out in front of hybrid from a side street or driveway or was he just riding down the street? Without this information we cannot really place blame. I will say that if he was riding responsibly down the street in the right hand lane (middle of it or not) and the car struck him from behind the car's driver is at fault. Judgment, on our part, must be with held until we know more facts.
        I used to do a lot of cycling and was an instructor of safe cycling, mostly aimed at kids. I know a little about the rights cyclists have on the road. Unfortunately most automobile drivers know very little about the rights of cyclists and are surprised to know that a bicycle is, by law, a motor vehicle. As a matter of fact, other than little kids, bicycles are legally not supposed to be on sidewalks.
        Accountability is a two way street (no pun intended). Again until we know the details we cannot place blame. The kid may have done something stupid, but so may have the driver of the hybrid.

          Those who represent the blind have been screaming about this for at least a year. If you can't see or hear the car... when is it safe to cross the street?

              A couple weeks ago when I was in Dallas, There was a report of a woman crossing a railroad track, while using her cell phone. She didn't hear the train coming! I wonder if the train is at fault? &lt;G&gt;

                Hmmm..maybe they can step up the voltage them Prius's electric motor.
                When a cyclist feels his hair stand on end, and gets a tingling sesation from the handlebars....that should be a clear enough signal.

                      But....
                      They are BOTH vehicles.
                      [u]If</u> the bicycle was adhering to vehicular traffic laws and was struck by the car, then it would be the car driver's fault.
                      Hybrid or not, the laws (and responsabilities) apply to both vehicles.

                        That's why I always had one a' them cardboard flappers on my bike's front forks. Not only did it sound cool, but I was being safe in giving blind or daydreaming pedestrians fair warning of my approach![8D]
