  • Whar Year Did Turn Signals Become Standard Equipment?

I was just wondering what year turn signals became standard on all Studebakers, and were they standard on the higher end line before the lower priced Studebakers?

I know they were still an option for 1950, but not sure how much longer. Thanks, Tom

I believe they became standard for the 1956 model year.

I believe that is correct, Craig.

IIRC, it became a Federal Law (at least in the United States; I don't know about Canada) that all cars manufactured after January 1, 1956, be equipped with directional signals as standard equipment.

It may be that they just went ahead and made them standard at the beginning of the 1956 model year for all 1956 model year cars manufactured, even in calendar year 1955. That way, dealers could charge extra for them as "options" until January 1, 1956. That is speculation, though, but I believe the law mandated their OEM status as of January 1, 1956. BP

This is NOT a Bob Palma Type Quiz, so I really do not know, but if I had to guess I think the end would be about 1952.

No, but the days are sure getting short, and the nights are cooling off.
If I ask enough questions, I could make a Studebaker Trivia game. Would you like to share in the royalties?

In some states they were required before then, so I guess for a car sold new in one of those states they would be "standard". Minnesota required signals starting in 1949 I believe.

Sort of like in these parts that a engine block heater is sort of "standard" in that often the dealers will order that factory option for what they put on their new vehicle lot.

In New York State, directional signals were required starting with the 1953 model year. They were still an option by Studebaker at that time, so Studebakers sold in NY were required to have this option.

The new Mickey Thompson tires I bought this summer require inner tubes.
No big deal except I was shocked at how much they cost now.
