  • '59 Lark Standard Steerng

    Hi Guys,
    What are we using with the new type fluids for lubricant in a standard steering (non-power) box in a '59 Lark?
    Also what ATF do you guys recommend as I do have some ATF left over from the 70's.

    It is questionable to use the Type "F" or Dexron that old, but definitely DO NOT use any old Type "A", or Newer for that matter!

    Remember ATF comes in MANY Flavors.

    The Steering Gear should be a Ross, so the Semi-Fluid John Deer Corn Head Grease talked about all the time here should be fine or the Special Grease sold at: http://studebakervendors.com

      So if I go to my local tractor supply store and ask for "Semi-Fluid John Deer Corn Head Grease" they'll know what I'm looking for? Sorry...I just thought it was witty.

        Probably not... I had to find a source out of state and have yet to install it into a Ross gear but it was cheap enough, under $10 for two tubes!

          Lucas motorcycle chain oil.
          It's fairly heavy (90 or 100W), it's got moly in it, it's got water dispersants and a couple other things that will/should work well in a steering box.
          Not like a grease that will create a cavity as the parts move around when it gets a little older. The oil will continue to wet everything...within the box.
          So far, only tiny drips that wet the frame, in a box with old seals.

            Studebaker International sells the appropriate lube for our steering boxes. It works perfectly. As far as transmission fluid, I asked that question at the Cooperator Session at the Warwick meet and Jon Myer stated that Type F is appropriate for our cars. Some said that Dexron would give a smoother shift. Type F gives a more definitive shift.
            He said that if anyone tries to sell us what they may call Type A, stay away from it. It's probably bogus.

              OK guys. Just got off the phone with my industrial Lubrication and fuel specialist and he called 76 Phillips 66 Lubrication Technical Services. They confirmed that (in my case '59 Lark) Studebakers which have the filler plug stating TYPE A, should now be superceded to DEXRON III for our Automatic Transmissions.
