It does look a little Avanti-ish....

Looks like an Avanti on Steroids! It is clear that Loewy did not get help with that one from his much better Design Team Members!
Can you say typical Loewy Gaudiness?

Mr Barris often tended toward excess and even frivolous ornamentation in my opinion.
It is hard to say for sure where Loewy ended and Barris began, but I'm guessing the bumper guards and dual airhorns are Mr B's.

That was one of the few customs I actually liked. Too bad.

After looking at the photos of this thing....the fire might have been a blessing!

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.......I find much to admire in that design. Indeed, Loewy himself called the '56 Jag, '57 BMW, and '60 Lancia the "grandparents of the Studebaker Avanti.

A masterpiece in many areas and design thoughts.

It looks good from the back but too cluttered in front.

Right, but did he have to create such an ugly grandchild?

The roof and rear window look very much like a Jensen Interceptor.

The 4th picture in reply 10 looks closer to an Amphicar than any Stude. It certainly isn't a car I'd want.

The overall shape is nice. The details from the front are pretty terrible. The back almost makes it imho. Looks like a sketch on a napkin built by someone else who lacked design training.

I don't see what's so wrong with it. Take off the horns and appendages (maybe even with them) and I'd drive that any day. Here are two versions.
