  • Identify this Hood Latch Support

I bought this at South Bend last week, but am unsure what it fits. Notice the large opening under the latch, which my 1950 Champion doesn't have. Also this one has two extra mounting holes just below the upper right and left mounting holes. The tag says 1956, but I'm not familure with that year and the seller was unsure if that's right. Anyone know for sure? Thanks, Tom

    Probably 1952, certainly NOT 1956.
The owner here of Leonard's former Green '52 Commander 2 Door Sedan should be able to I.D. it, if it is.

I would venture '51 Commander. The two extra holes are where the horns are mounted under the latch.

If it was for a 51 champion there should also be a hole on the drivers side pretty close to the bolt flange for the horn wires to exit but can`t see it in the pictures
Also the hood release cables are different between 50/51
The one in the picture looks to be for a 50 as the 51 is just a flat plate that uses a 90 angled hook at the end
I`d opt for a 50 that has had the horns relocated from the cowl to under that panel.

The difference between a '51 Champion and a '51 Commander. Tom's purchase is for a Commander, not a Champion.

That`s correct Rockne but it you look close at the OP`s pictures you can see the hood lock latch.

If you look at your pictures that latch it different you`ll also note no hole for the horn wires to exit in the original post but there is in your picture.
            That`s why I opted for a 50 rather than a 51.
The 50 latch takes a ball end type cable whereas the 51 uses a 90 hook end cable

The 52 radiator shroud is wider, but the latch plate is the same 51 and 52. My book doesn't cover the 50 models.

The 51 air deflector is listed as part # 293894 for 10G,H,3H
                The latch as # 293900 for 10G,12G,H,3H
For the 50 the deflector is 289575 for the 9g and 289570 for the 17a
The 50 latch is 290484 listed for 7g.8g,9g,15a,16a,17a.
There was no mention of a Commander in the op post.

Thanks guys. So it looks like the 51 Commander, but with a 1950 latch.
Wish my 50 Commander was close by to look at, but I only have my 50 Champion at home.
I agree that it probably can't be a 1950 Commander due to the angle of the V on this air deflector.
I never thought about the two different cable ends. Was this a model year change 50 to 51, or might it have been a mid year change? Thanks, Tom

I wouldn`t like to guess on that one Tom.
All I`ve noticed are the differences on the 50 to 51 Champions as I had both that I made one out of.
I do know that the 51 has the horns located under that panel as well as having a hole (drivers side) for the horn wires to exit from.
The 51 Champion and Commander are listed as the same part number so they should be the same air deflector.
It`s the 50 that there is some kind of difference due to the two part numbers for that panel, not having a 50 commander I wouldn`t like to guess what is the difference between them.
As to the latch cable my 50 was broken so I used the 51 cable but came across that end cable difference between those years

It doesn't have the holes for the horn bracket.
                      My 52 looks totally different.
