  • 51 commander conv Is it real?

Saw this a few minutes ago. Looks good in pics. Is this a real convertible or one of the Studebakers bar tribute cars? Just curious, I am not a player on it either way. Steve https://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDeta...1%26refine%3D#

The description indicates it's real, but the cowl tag (which is there) can't be read.....Questions like this one are another reason 'repo' serial/cowl tags have the potential to create problems!

Quality repo body tags have not been available until Jerry Kurtz started producing them recently. The Serial No. would reference the production order that would reveal the original body designation. I see no reason to believe it is anything but a '51 Commander convertible. The Serial No. indicates a Commander built in Canada.

Looks like the real deal to me. Sure is a lot of red.

The Studebakers restuarant chain originated here in Tallahassee, and a local friend knows the guy who built up all of the display cars. The same friend ended up with two of them, one was sold and the other was parted out. The restaurant cars were very crude.

          What is a 'repo' tag?
Something you get when you don't pay for your Stude?

No Jeff, a 'repo' tag is a term we use in the automotive world to indicate that a vehicle's serial number plate, (or cowl tag in the case of Studebaker vehicles), has been reproduced.

Interesting... Learn something new every day...
I Googled 'repo tag' and get nothing related to cars.

Then Googled 'repro tag' and got quite a few hits.
Then Googled 'repop tag' and got more hits.

I've been in the automotive world for a long, long time and never heard the term 'repo tag'....

This has the convertible top (at least the mechanism) and proper rear seat. The restaurant cars were usually hacked from sedans.
It would be nice to see this one with the top up though, wouldn't it?
