  • Avanti 1964?

Does anyone know what the 64 Avanti headlamp cutouts look like under the headlamp bezels? The reason I asked is because I am trying to figure out what year an Avanti is I am considering purchasing. The serial number is R4205 which indicates it is a 1963. The supercharged tag on the front fenders is the newer tag, and it has square headlamps. However, the dash does not have the wood trim which I think would indicate a 1963. The engine serial number is RS2350, and the body tag is RQ3301, it does not have the 63 prefix. Any insight would be great.

Square lights were introduced at R 4892, so yours is a 63 and had the front panel replaced at some point.

That Avanti (4205) was built in April 1963 as part of the 1963 model year run.
Unsold 1963 Avantis could have been registered/titled as 1964s, but are now considered to be 1963s.
Square headlight front panels were available after round headlight front panels were no longer available. I have known of damaged 1963s that were repaired with 1964 front panels. This is probably what the Avanti that you are referring to has.
The "63" was removed from the serial number starting with Avanti R-3100.
