  • "Jeopardy" - Avanti

On last evening's "Jeopardy" TV show, the returning champion was a guy that said that he was restoring a 1963 Studebaker Avanti (during the short interview section of the show). They had a short interchange about the Avanti including that he had the mechanicals done and that he had the body and interior to go as well as mention of the quantity built. Alex Trebek, the host, had a comment about the Avanti's strange look. I was rooting for him, but the guy did not win again yesterday.

So did "Alex" kind of "Trash" the Avantis look?

I would classify his comment about the looks of the Avanti as being negative. It was just his opinion. Not everyone likes the looks of a Studebaker Avanti.

Alex said the Avanti was rare and sought after by car collectors....or something to that effect.

Even a brief mention might help sell a couple of cars.

I'd bet that somewhere there was an old guy who was looking for a collector car and that mention reminded him that Avantis are out there.

And not everybody like Alex's arrogance. I like the show and the questions...but Trebek....no.

I thought that it was a good mention of the Studebaker Avanti. The owner, whose name I've forgotten, is a police officer from Norfolk, VA.

That was me, by the way (still kicking myself for not betting more on Final Jeopardy, but I watch almost no TV anymore, and now not a thing about 90% of the shows currently on; I bet small because I thought I'd miss it -- and then they asked about one of the handful of shows I do watch! And I was back in the lead too). And I thought Alex was a perfectly nice guy. Between the filmed segments he'd come over to chat with us, or go to the edge of the stage and field questions from the audience. He was pretty funny too.

Pretty cool Darren! I just did an overnight in Norfolk last month on my way to the Memory Lane Car Show in Rogersville TN (awesome event, more later). Had I known, I would have looked you up. Been restoring and selling Avanti parts for over 30yrs. Let me know if I can be of any help.

My wife and I usually watch Jeopardy, but for some reason missed it that day. RATS!
Hope to see you (and the Avanti) in Dover later this month!

Congratulations Darren! Win or lose, I'd say that JEOPARDY is one show that it would be an honor to be on! Good luck with your '63 Studebaker Avanti restoration.

During the following show, Alex Trebek mentioned that the previous champion was restoring an old car (no mention of Studebaker or Avanti). Alex also said someting to the effect that many men do this (restore old cars), but that he doesn't understand doing it.

I watch Jeapordy all of the time but missed this show. I don't understand the beef with Alex. I think he does a fine job Wish I had seen this show with a neighbor to north as a participant.

A lot of us missed the show that night. Preempted due to NBA playoffs.

Some view his persona as "arrogant". He does, after all, have the answer to everything! If only I had his prompters! It's certainly a couple steps up from "The Dating Game!" And has probably added a few tidbits of knowledge to an otherwise videomesmerized audience. They did, after all, mention Avantis. When was the last time you heard that on "Wheel?"
