  • Stude in the news...(old, old news!)

I just saw an ad on TV about an upcoming program on George H. W. Bush. Got me to thinkin'...

Does anyone remember an article about H.W. as a young man leaving New England and driving to Texas in a maroon '47 Champion??

Didn't Jimmy Carter at one time also have a Studebaker of about the same vintage?

The senior Mr. Bush was really easy to talk to, but I was disappointed that he didn't remember much about the car when I asked him.

( Associated Press, Richard Quinn / Antique Studebaker Club Inc. )Jimmy Carter (1977-1981): Studebaker Commander

"In 1948, Rosalynn and I bought our first automobile, a beautiful gray Studebaker Commander (Land Cruiser)," Carter told the Studebaker Drivers Club "Turning Wheels" magazine in August 1992. It would have looked similar to this Commander. "It turned out to be a superb vehicle - fast, smooth-moving, with never any repair problems ... The Studebaker has always been our favorite automobile, partially for sentimental reasons but also because of its qualities in providing us enjoyable and dependable transportation."
