  • Studebaker Accidents

    It seems that several of the active Studebaker folks have had 'incidents' with their Studebakers.
    Hopefully this is not a trend.
    What incidents have y'all had recently?

    I had a gas fire under the hood on the Yellow POS a few months ago...
    Burned up some wires under the hood.

      This was about two years ago, hit in the rear pushed into two more cars.

          No I sold it to someone from SE kansas that owned a bodyshop, I have been told it is back on the road.

              Karel Staple members Brian Challender and Linda Barnhardt were hit by a left turning red light runner in their 63 Cruiser, totaling it and injuring Linda. Linda is out of her body brace and they have since replaced the car with a similar one. Steve Rainville, aka 55Coupe on the forum, and his girl friend Jilg were rear-ended in his 55 President coupe while driving on the freeway at 65 mph. It caused $7k in damage and whiplashed both of them. They are recovering and the car is finally in the body shop. Silver lining is Steve is paying the difference to have the whole car painted.

              Can't attribute fault on either one of these to the Studebaker drivers. But it does show that we take a chance every time we put our cars, and ourselves, on the road.

                Had the '64 Daytona convertible rear-ended while in Colorado Springs. A young guy in a jacked-up Ford F250 4X4 ran into it. I was trying to exit a parking lot into fast moving traffic, edged ahead a bit, and then stopped as my lane was not clear. He was following too close, and the painted plastic bumper on his rig hit the chrome '66-style grille over the left tail light. Cleaned a bunch of paint off his bumper, and caved in the trunk rear panel where the tail lamp housing mounts by less than 1/4". You have to look for the damage to see it. One tiny paint chip on the trunk lid. The guy offered to have it fixed, but I passed on it. I can pull the bent panel without incurring any paint issues, and the paint chip can get fixed when I deal with the pre-existing door dings.

                  A storm came through some time in late May or early June and took out a power line which in turn pulled down the entire end of my storage building, exposing several Studebakers to the elements.



                  Luckily someone I knew spotted the damage and relayed word to someone else who called me. Took 5 days to build a new truss, put up the metal and rebuild and hang the doors.

                  Everything is back to normal...

                    Here is one that did not involve my Studebaker, thank heaven, but was one I will always remember.
                    It was 1968 and I was getting onto the Ventura freeway in the San Fernando Valley, California in my 1955 Commander on my way to Disney Studios. I had a role in a movie and had an early makeup call. My Commander had a fresh gold lacquer paint job, chrome wheels, and rumbled like a fighter plane. As I merged with traffic I noticed a CHP (California Highway Patrol) car in the fast lane just even with me. I was looking at him and he was looking at me. Suddenly I noticed that the traffic in front of him had stopped. He was too busy looking at my car and slammed right into the back of the car in front of him at 65 MPH. The chain reaction took out at least 6 other cars. I cruised on to the freeway and went on to work. I never found out what happened to all the folks involved in that pileup. It never made the news. I suspect the CHP suppressed the incident. Rather embarrassing.

                      Earlier this year, I was backing the Cruiser out of the barn far enough to have plenty of light while I worked in the trunk. My Buick was parked further up than I thought (duh!), so I backed into it. The Cruiser bumper guards left a matched set of dimples on either side of the Buick's license plate. Metal trumps plastic every time.

                        A year ago ,I parked by a concrete extension, forgot about it and when leaving I turned right into it, nailing my running board and right frt. glass fender. It took off paint, but really did very little damage considering the hit and that concrete doesn't move. The painter who looks after my truck had it good as new the next week.

                          No accidents of my doing, but the other day I came out and found a good sized ding in my rear bumper. Some *%#& jerk dinged my chrome and didn't even have the decency to leave a note!

                          But it's not the end of the world. That's the risk you take when you truly drive your stude daily, I suppose. I'll let it get a couple more dings before I pay someone to hammer 'em out and rechrome it.

                            Here's my Avanti a couple of years ago when the brakes failed when backing out of the garage. I had a bad habit of closing the door as I was taking the transmission out of park. The brake pedal went to the floor, the car lurched into reverse and went backwards fast enough I was unable to pull the door closed in time. The open door hit the wall and was pulled all the way around to the front quarter panel. The only way to stop the car was to turn the ignition off and it rolled to a stop before hitting the well head for the house. The door (split), hinges (twisted), bulkhead (cracked and split) and front panel all had to be replaced. At least the insurance covered it all.

                            I no longer wait to pull the door closed.
