63 Lark rear fender

  • 63 Lark rear fender

    I'm replacing the left rear fender on my 63 Cruiser. When I took off the old fender I noticed that there was a line of old caulking along the mating surface on the top. What kind of caulking should I use when I install the new fender? Are there any other places that should also be caulked?

    When I did mine I used 3M Strip Caulk; also between the fender front dog leg.

      I wouldn't recommend the 8578 3M strip calk for the upper portion. It doesn't take paint well in that it really doesn't dry but stays flexible. I would use a paintable caulking instead like 3M 8362. It comes in different colors which really doesn't matter if its going to be painted over, but dries hard so that the paint will adhere to a hard surface instead of a flexible one that would show cracking with the flex of the body over time.

            Hey Guys, I was planning on using the caulk strips for the bolts, however the old caulking where the fender meets the body was very hard and looks like it may have been applied with a caulking gun. Where can I get the 3M 8509? How does this differ from the 3M 8362?

              Hi, FYI, I went to NAPA Auto this morning and those M #s are no longer available. The parts guy recommended I try NAPA 4323 universal black firm seam sealer. The directions say it is sand able and paintable, dries in about 30 minuets. I'll post my results.
