    I had no idea Cuba's classics could be sold to us imperialist Yankee pigs...

    Sadly, though, these cars for the most part, have been cobbled together from A to Z. Engines from Taxi's, patched up bodies with different parts welded on to make them work, and the tropical weather down there can't be that good on the body work, either. I'm sure there will be a few gems, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high for saving too many of these classics. Remember, the reason there are so many of these cars down there is due to the fact that they have not been allowed to import anything into that island for over 50 years. These cars have used, over-used, abused, rebuilt over and over and driven into the ground out of sheer desperation. Its a testament to the heart of the Cuban people that they were even able to save as many as they did.

      Yes, in a few years, maybe less, the roads and streets of Cuba will be filled with new Toyotas, Hyundais, Kias, and Hondas. The pre 1960 American cars will no doubt be sent to China.
      Hopefully if there are any decent cars left, they will be saved and others would give up some good used parts.

        A number of years ago there was a documentary on the Sundance Channel titled "Yank Tanks." It was about the existence and survival of these American made cars in Cuba.

          Right on, Sals54!...In the land of "have-nots" and "have even less"...those poor cars probably have few parts left that are unmodified. Besides...if you think mouse pee smells bad here...imagine...

            I have been to Cuba on numerous occasions and indeed the American cars are worked and reworked most having engine transplants from Russian diesels to Toyota gas and diesel engines. Some of their bright work(s) are reproduced in a fashion in Cuba. It was my understanding that non Cuban residents were not allowed to purchase the American cars but things do change. There are already Hyundais and others owned by locals. They are sold off by the government after they have served their use as "government vehicles" or car rentals. Permission by the government is given to those who purchase them, usually you have to be a doctor (who has served overseas) or a specialist (usually who has served abroad). My friend's brother in Cuba owns a Hyundais, he is an artist who worked in Mexico another person I met in Cuba drives his sister's Hyundais (she is a doctor working in Jamaica).

              In the Yank Tanks documentary they show a 3" or so steel bar and comment that they make their own piston rings. There was also an iron plate they apparently heat glass over to make (safety???) windshields. Makes a CASO look like Donald Trump.

                My wife has a cousin who married a Cuban woman & moved there & so on & I've got 3 friends & one aunt who's been there & all I can say exept for agreeing to previous posts is that it's just as sad as Amsterdam "cleaning out" many, many of the house-boats in the city's canals 'cause it only makes the tourism who remember what it used to be like to chose other goals...
