If starting with a small turbo, the step up required is beyond the homebrew belt and bearing capacity. If starting with a large turbo, such as from a diesel, the inertia is such it overstresses the drive.
This also explains the short lifespan of our drive belts and the ball drive on McCulloch/Paxtons. They only turn 5:1 over engine RPM and even that's a killer.
FWIW, the Procharger, Vortec, Novi, et al, are essentially belt driven turbochargers with another internal belt or gear drive stepup, but then that's why they cost $2,500 to $4,500. Boost isn't cheap to buy or to own.
