The engine cowling really does resemble the headlight bezels on the 50-51 cars, I think.

I had never thought of that. But especially if you're looking at 1950 Commander/Land Cruiser headlight bezels, you can easily imagine the cowling around the P51/P38 engines with that big air inlet underneath.
