  • Just discovered GT Hawk 64V8006 SED64VK6 California car within 35 miles of the house

This vehicle was owned by the same family till 2009 when they sold it to a local NC guy who did nothing but sit the front wheels on blocks. The parents bought it new at Plaza Motors in Feb '64 (all the paperwork was in the dash) and kept it till they went into retirement and passed along to their kids. It has sat covered and uncranked for over 20 years with all the chrome and accessories removed. The rear bumper needs re-chrome bad. The rest of the stuff looks pretty good. It has the 289-4V engine with auto floor stick, pwr steering and brakes, full instrumented dash with tach and AM/FM radio.

Well done Ed, that looks nice and should clean up well. Enjoy the Hawk once she's all OK again.

Thank you! I'm almost embarrased at how little I paid for this car. The guy that had it didn't know anything about Studebakers. He bought it on the spur of the moment 3 years ago because the descendant that owned it had to quickly move out of state and wanted to get rid of the family heirloom. He ran an add in a local trade paper that said; "For sale 1964 Studebaker $2000 firm." When I called he didn't even know it was a Hawk (all the emblems are off and all the title says is 1964 Studebaker 2-dr). He said it was a '64 2dr with single headlights and he thought it had a "turbocharger." I immediately thought OMG he's got a 1964 Super Lark!!! The holy grail of Studes. So, I was totally surprised to instead find a virtually rustfree, fully instrumented, auto floor shift, 4-V Hawk with AM/FM. Somebody else had looked at it when he got it and apparently thought the brake booster was some kind of turbocharger. lol. I guess a lot of people with limited Studebaker knowledge thought they all came with superchargers. Anyway, after I explained he didn't have a turbo or supercharged car, the price came down a bit and I jumped on it.

Well, as they say the correct price is one both buyer and seller are happy with, you have a nice car whatever the cost, and seems pretty loaded too. Will be interesting to obtain the build sheet from the museum too.

According to the production stats there were only 1548 '64 8 cyl Hawks made. That's a small number compared to the 9000 Hawks made in '62. Looks like the production of sales and Hawks declined swiftly over the last couple years. As I noted, mine was not sold till Feb '64 which was two months after Studebaker announced it was folding up U.S. operations and doing away the Avanti's, Hawks and trucks...

Thank you! And, I completely overlooked the AM/FM radio till we had hauled the car home. My brother pointed that rare item out to me when he was looking it over. The folks that bought the car new opted for lots of stuff except an R-series motor, power windows and A/C. I would've expected folks from California to want A/C. But since they didn't purchase it new till Feb '64, I guess there weren't a whole lot of choices left.

Unless I am not thinking right tonight, I do not remember power windows as being an option on 1964 Hawks.

Nice score! Looking forward to seeing it at NCSDC meets. As for the A/C, I lived in the San Francisco area for years and never missed not having it! Russ Farris
