True, Leonard: To bring the one I saw up to the appearance of the one you posted would require at least $30,000! [:0] BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

      Values Going Up?

Got a call yesterday from a fellow referred to me for valuation on his 1946 Studebaker Champion Business Coupe. [8D]

'Went to see it and it was poor to say the least. 'Probably had an engine swap at one time as the firewall was heavily patched with sheet metal strips and pop-rivets. The whole car had been dismantled, rough body work done, all of it poorly, desperately needing a redo, and maybe 5% reassembled. Much rust still present. No glass, all exterior surfaces were either red oxide primer, rough bondo, or chicken wire with bondo overfill "ready to be finish sanded."

Seat present but no door panels. The entire interior needed everything, or what you could see of it. All manner of removed parts stuffed in the passenger compartment. [xx(]

[:I] Overall, probably "do-able" into something only because it is a fairly rare model, but it would be a real stretch as to whether it should be parted or built as some kind of rod. Restoring to original would be foolish and frustrating.

'Owner was a nice enough guy who bought it years ago in Chicago before moving to Indianapolis. It was a project when he got it and it is no better now; just a mess everywhere you looked, and a shaky one at that.

You could tell he really had no idea what it was worth, but had been told that, fully restored, it was worth upwards of $60,000. [:0] I allowed that I know/knew of a nice, drivable '41 in western Indiana that could be had for maybe $8,000, ready to go. Pressed, I said his '46, as a kit/project, might be on the high side around $1,000, and that was a stretch. He was honestly surprised and somewhat disappointed, but not angry.

He then volunteered, "I took it over to the GoodGuys show at Indianapolis Raceway Park in June and a guy saw it there and has stayed in touch. He said he'll be here tomorrow and wants to give $4,000 for it; should I take it?" [}]

I said, "Yeah, and be careful you don't sprain an ankle doing cartwheels to the bank!" BP

I was offered 14K for Christine by a Realtor at my local bar and of course asked him if he had a checkbook. When he headed out to his car to get it, I had to tell him I was not ready to sell. The guy had no idea of the value, didn't seem to care, he just liked the car. I kept his card in case it does not go nuts on ebay when I'm done with Christine. I found 3 of the 4 pieces of belt line NOS and sent the other one out for a replate. I just can't sell her until she's done, I'm having too much fun.
