Further, The Plain Brown Wrapper is at a distinct disadvantage as to tires. If you read the Camaro article, it benefitted from some really wide, sticky meats that could not be used on a 1964 model year automobile at The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race. BP

What I notice is the Camaro is only 2-3 mph faster through the lights. Considering the difference in drag coefficient between the slippery new Camaro and the box shaped Lark, the power of the R-3 motor is very impressive. I'm curious if the PBR has ever been run with stickier tires, just to see what it will do if it could have a faster 60 foot time. I also notice the the Camaro ET only improved about a 10th with drag radials, so the street tires hook it up pretty well. I think they also mentioned they used traction control.

We haven't tried the Wrapper with drag tires, Pat. I'd be interested in doing that sometime, but it can't be at the Pure Stock Drags because they won't allow it, even on time trial runs. Maybe on a warm-up run at Muncie, although I'd first have to get the tires and then figure out what to do with them afterwards since I rarely get to a strip except for the PSMCDR. Ted would be the expert on this, but we've talked about this in the past, and my impression is that the Wrapper might pick up around a half second with the drag tires. Maybe more, since Ted really has to watch out for wheelspin at every launch. The rather skinnny tires we have to use don't help much.

Think of all of the tech, and computer work, and engineering that went into the Camaro to only be 2/3 of a second quicker than a 45 year old + Extinct Stude.

I am aware of what the PSMCDR is, but what are the rules on tire? Only the size the car had stock? Only the style the car had stock {as in Bias/or radial or not} ? Or?

In 40 years at the PSMCDR when this 2012 Camaro is racing in it, will the same size tire, but a drag radial, be allowed?

Kelly: As to tires, The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race is understandably lenient on cars made before "wide oval" performance tires were introduced. For example, if a 1962 bubble-top 409 Bel Air had to run on 8.00X14 bias-ply reproduction tires, it would be almost imposible to control.

So they let the earlier cars run radials, as long as all four tires and wheels are of the same size.

For our Studebakers, the largest permissable tire is a P235/70R15. IIRC, that is now what is fitted to both The Plain Brown Wrapper and The Stude Tomato (Ted Harbit's 1963 R2/4-speed Lark Regal 2-door). BP
