I recently purchased a 1953 2R a couple of weeks ago. I've always loved the look of the 2R pickups. I've spent my life mostly working on Chevys and Buicks so I don't know a whole lot about Studebakers. My dad owned on in the '70 that we put a Chevy straight six with a powerglide in. I always wanted one for myself to make a mild Resto-mod from. I have looked off and on for a few years, seeing most on Craigslist, several have been nice but just never spoke to me. We just moved to Washington several months ago and I don't have a shop and the garage is totally full of my tools and parts for my '49 Buick Roadmaster Sedanette and '61 Buick Invicta Bubble top. I am waiting on the County for the permit to build the new shop so I haven't bee looking for anything just looking at Craigslist as kind of a car show for me. A couple of weeks ago though, I saw this '53 2R and for some reason it spoke to me. It was a Monday and my next day off was a Friday. I figured if it was still around then, I would go check it out. Thursday evening I called and he still had it. He said he had gotten calls from all over the country about it and was happy to know someone fairly close was interested in it. I went and checked it out the next morning and found it to be in pretty good shape. The only real rust in it is in the cab corners which are not a big deal. We struck up a deal and trailered it back home. When I looked at the title after getting home, Yes, I know I should have checked it before I paid for it, I noticed that it was titled with the engine number and it didn't look like what I expected. I did a little research in the previous days and found that the engine numbers were supposed to start with 1RXXX. This one said 6RXXX. I thought "What? Wait! NO WAY! I checked the VIN tag and sure enough it said model 2R6-12!! Happy day!!! Then to top it all off when I crawled under it I found it had an overdrive transmission! So I ended up with a 2R6 with overdrive and less than 57K original miles on it. It needs a good going over but I now intend to keep it stock. No resto-mod for this one. One thing I really need to find though is an original seat for it. Someone in the past has put what appears to be seat springs out of an AD Chevy pickup. It will get me going but I want the right ones in it.
So, I guess by now I need to post pics...
