  • J. M. Studebaker in Chinese Camp, CA

Does anyone know for certain that J.M. worked at Chinese Camp, CA before going to Placerville? This site has a photo of the shop where he is supposed to have learned his trade before Placerville. It would make it rather historic in my opinion. Here is the link with a photo. Another site (http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/...-03/1016982624) also has some details of his history there at the Egling blacksmithy. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dberry/6341318587/

I don't know much about Wheelbarrow Johnny's time in California, but I doubt he learned his trade there. It is my understanding that he arrived in California with the skills of Blacksmithing and the ability to build wheelbarrows. I am sure he honed his skills and learned much in the process. But, I believe he "learned his trade" at home before setting off to the far west.
