64 Red Daytona Convertable/sold by Ray Tanner Motors/Phoenix AZ

    I think I may have found a picture of the car in the 1964 St Mary's High School year book El Caballero. Kinda looks like this one is white though, but can't really tell.

      OK, Lou (and others following this thread):

      Here's the data on all the 1964 South Bend convertibles shipped to Arizona. There are only three of them:

      1. 64V6966: Destination: Phoenix. Astra White, white top. Red vinyl bucket seats. 289/225, Powershift, power steering, power brakes, etc.

      2. 64V8913: Destination: Yuma. Bermuda Brown, white top. Brown vinyl bench seat. R1/Powershift, etc.

      3. 64V11092: Destination: Phoenix. Strato Blue, white top. Blue vinyl bench seat. 259 / 180 / Flightomatic. AM-FM radio, etc.

      OK, would-be sleuths: One of those allegedly couldn't have been built as specified, yet that's exactly what the Production Order says.

          I think that the car in question is either 6966 or 11092, based on Bob P's detective work and Lou's yearbook photo.
          I will guess that Lou just wanted it to be red or had the color confused with another car.

            You're right, Dave: There is no mention of a seat option on 64V8913 and it is not a full-package car, so there's no record of it being built with anything except a standard bench seat even though it had Option #20: Powershift floor automatic!

            It would be interesting to see the car; I'll bet somebody got "free" bucket seats. ('Same as my own 1964 Daytona convertible: It has no seat option specified, but is equipped with individually-adjustable front seats. It's history is known from Day One and all parties swear the seats have never been changed or even reupholstered, which is entirely believable when you examine the car closely.)

              Hey, thanks. In the picture in the high school year it does look white. So it must be: 64V6966...does it still exhist? There were two Studebaker dealers in Phoenix at the time. Ray Tanner Motors and I can't remember the name of the other one, but it was on west McDowell, just off Central Ave. They were also the MB dealer...Phoenix Motors per haps?

                I would think the Yuma '64 Convert would have been sold at Leeper's Studebaker. He became the local Stude dealer on February 14, 1963, taking over Bob Butcher Studebaker, which was where my '63 was sold - well, at least according to the Shipping document. In addition, I think Leepers is the dealer which sold one of the nine R3 Avantis. (please correct me if I am wrong on this).

                  Was there a "Randall Studebaker" in Mesa by any chance? 50 years ago Mesa was its own entity concerning dealerships unlike today where one city runs into another with virtually no visual differences.

                    I do remember a Studebaker dealer in Mesa, but not it's name. It was located on the North side of the main drag between Tempe and Mesa.

I was at Filer's a couple times to do trades with Buffalo dealers like Rogers, but I don't remember a convertible. In fact, I went as far afield as Atlanta once. The used wagon I picked up there had cord showing on the original Dunlop tires, and I had to change one on the way back to Rochester -- good thing only one went as the company did not give me a credit card or anything.

                        Red '63 with a white top. Sorry, this is an edit. When I originally posted this I thought I'd seen a black top on the car in the photo.

I dug out my paperwork from my SNM Archives visit where I found out about the Bordeaux Red '64 convertible, and it was serial no. 64V-5962. The retail sale card, to Glenn Bestwick of Fredonia, PA, was in with the May '64 retail sales cards, and in June '64 I noted a card for Commander 2-door sedan serial 64S-2954 being traded to "Advance Studebaker Buffalo, NY". Ring a bell?

                          Ironically, I also saw Glenn Bestwick buying 64V-13758, a Commander 2-door sedan, in Feb. '64, and also a '64 Cruiser 64V-9236, in Feb. '65, trading in a "1964 Studebaker" (the only description on the card). Ed Filer remembers him as a good customer, but not much else. Someone else told me he was killed in a car accident sometime in the '70's.
