Not really, just wanted to verify success

I wish I had stuck around to see the whole thing because transmissions are one thing that I've never done myself. Unfortunately there were piles of old rusty parts that I just couldn't resist picking through to see if I could find anything useful!

WOW- What a day!

Got started on the trans. around Noon as planned. About 12:30 Biggs, Guido, and Dick Steinkamp started peer-pressuring us to take a break and come meet up with them for an impromptu MGE (meet, greet, and eat). But Doc Garbareno and Gord Richmond were into the process, and we pushed on: Gord and Doc, along with recruiting Tom Bredehoft and Phil Hendrickson. They did the work; I cleaned parts and videotaped, and tried to stay out of the way[)] Over the next 4 hours or so, lots of folks came by and watched parts of the process.

Turns out the planetary cluster was totally trashed[xx(] This was caused by running without gear oil[:I] Now I know: when you check gear oil level, you check the trans. proper, AND ALSO the O/D unit!





Doc and Gord had brought plenty of parts, and had everything needed to get it back together correctly; filled it with oil and Gord took it, me, and my nephew Evyn (VERY patient future Stude nerd![^]) out to the lot where Molly sat looking forlorn on the tow dolly.

As he had done all day, Gord fearlessly scrambled under taking pity on me and Molly, and in less than an hour we popped the freshly rebuilt trans. in, buttoned it up, and test-drove it; SUCCESS!! I drove it, Gord took her for a spin, then a group of us celebrated by raiding my cooler for various refreshments Had fun talking Studes with Gord, Doc, and Rich, Mike, and Dave from Studebakers Northwest (in whose area we did the rebuild). From there it was on to get Mexican food (complete with musical dinners) and more Studebaker talk[^]

As we headed out, it was noted that Molly had no brake lights; so Mike told me to pop the hood. Next thing I know, not only was the brake light switch determined to be faulty, Mike found the horn wire to be busted, wires starting to touch the manifold, dist. cap loose, and 3 butt-spliced plug wires![:0][B)] After tinkering with these things some, I was strongly advised by all in attendance to seek legal recourse against the seller of the car; my attorneys have been contacted, and I have been assured said seller will be in law enforcement's custody by Noon today...

All in all, a great day; great weather, trans. fixed and installed, and I again have transportation around the Meet. But best of all was meeting a great bunch of guys[^][^] To Gord, Doc, Tom, and Phil- I can't thank you enough! You were busting your butts doing a grubby job when you could/should have been enjoying all the Meet has to offer; and all for a stranger and his Studebaker![:I][^] I simply can't adequately express my gratitude...

My quiet, shy 12-year-old nephew Evyn said- completely unprovoked and out of character for him- "That's a pretty cool bunch of guys to hang out with!"

I couldn't agree more.[^]
