I still don't have that info myself; assuming it'll be at or near Studebakers Northwest (wherever they are!)...

I'll post it here as soon as I find out.

Would it be possible to ask this question of the experts while doing the seminar?

We have a '60 Lark with a 259 and 3spd T-86 OD trans. The overdrive is currently not working, I need to hook up the wiring. The OD handle is pushed in and it appears that the cable is adjusted on the trans so that the car should be in overdrive.

The concern that I have is that the car does not "free wheel" in any gear as I believe it should. It behaves as if it is locked out of OD. I don't want to hook up the electrical side, try to get it to go into OD and have something break.

I thought that the solinoid may have locked in the OD position, but that is not the case and it does operate correctly. (I removed it from the car and checked it.)

      Any ideas?

I know that a lot of you lucky buggers on your way to South Bend, but hope to get some ideas from those of us who are not going.

      Thanks!!

      Rob

This is Gord Richmond posting from Bob40's place.

Rob, it sounds like your lockout cable may not be properly adjusted. Locked out means the cable handle is pulled all the way out, and the lockout lever (rearmost one on the tranny case)is in the forward position. With the lockout control pushed in, overdrive is enabled, BUT, the lockout lever MUST BE all the way back against the stop to enable free wheeling, and thus the overdrive. You have to have freewheeling for overdrive to engage.

If the lever is all the way back against the stop, and STILL no freewheeling, the over-running clutch may be seized, and the OD will have to come apart.

Thanks to Bob40 for the use of the computer, and I hope this helps.

Thank for the response Gord. The lever is all the way back, so I'm afraid it may be the overdrive as you mentioned. It may be easier to replace the transmission than to repair it. I don't know. I've never had one of these apart.

The other problem is that the car is a convertible and I think you have to pull the engine to get the tranny out. Bummer as I just got the car put together.

Please check an see if this is the concensis of those at the tranny workshop. Thanks for the response and have a great time in South Bend!!

So did it work? I didn't stick around to see the finished product but it looked like Gord and Doc had things under control.
