  • R2 Super Lark racer in Canada

I recently received a query about an R2 Super Lark sedan that was apparently raced in Canada by a Dan McMahon in 1964. I am personally not aware of this car nor is George Krem. The person asking is from Clifton Virginia and thinks that the car competed in FIA-sanctioned Canadian rallies. If anyone out there has any knowledge or recollection I would appreciate a response.

Dan McMahon lived in the Portland, Oregon area. The car was a Strato Blue Commander 2 door sedan, R-2, 4 speed. I had seen it race in SCCA (I think) racing at the road course at Portland International Raceway. I also saw it once at Marks Motors Studebaker in Portland - It was in their shop with the heads off. It did have R-3 type cast iron headers. I think it raced around the northwest, and maybe in British Columbia. A couple of years later, the car was for sale cheap - had some body damage. I last saw the car in Corvallis, OR in about 1968, driven on the street with a badly damaged left front fender. Unfortunately, Dan passed away long ago at a young age.

Thanks Jerry. I'll pass this info along to the gentleman in Virginia, who incidentally just emailed me with a note that Dan McMahon might have been from Oregon. Obviously he was and the mystery is cleared up.

Looking through the "1964 Avanti Powered List" his car could have been 64V 10943. Dan's home town was West Linn, OR.

I remember seeing a similar car at a Muscle Car Show, in Florida, in the late 1980's. Perhaps it was the same car? Has it survived? I may have taken some pics of it - don't remember - i will have to do some digging.
