  • Are you among the Studebaker cognoscenti?

RE: Page 309 of the August 2011 Hemmings Motor News:

Thereon is an unnecessarily-long-winded advertisement for a 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air hardtop with fuel injection. The car is said to be,

"...known among '57 Chevy Bel Air aficionados and cognoscenti as the fuelie."

Whoa! We're talking about some serious verbiage here; I had to go look that one up:

    cognoscente (sigular): a connoisseur.

(Actually, I had sounded it out COG-NO-SCENT-EE and imagined it to be a medical malady where you had such a bad cold that when you changed your differential fluid, you were unable to smell the strong sulphur odor in gear oil! Ah, the hazards of being a gear head.) <GGG> BP

We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

    Ayn Rand:
"You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality."

    G. K. Chesterton: This triangle of truisms, of father, mother, and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilizations which disregard it.

AND I have a vintage bottle of "Studebaker at South Bend" Coke (1983 was an excellent year) to prove it!

Could be worse. Keep it up, and you'll end up an aficionado.

Carefully note that in British, it's kawg-no-shent-ee. One would not want to be taken for a Englishter* in B-Burg.

As some here have already affirmed, '57 Chevy Bel Air and aficionados and cognoscenti when used in the same sentence creates cognitive dissonance.

Let's think of some other examples:

              Lite beer aficionados and cognoscenti
              Hormel wiener aficionados and cognoscenti
              Toyota Camry aficionados and cognoscenti
              Twinkies aficionados and cognoscenti
America's Funniest Home Videos aficionados and cognoscenti

It also turned out to be the last time I got to see an Avanti being actually manufactured in South Bend.

I like it. If I can remember how to spell it, I can refer to myself as a Champion and a C Cab cognoscenti..... Makes me sound important!

Personally, I am not only tired of Chevys; but I hate it when people refer to my 57 Champion as a 57 Chevy!!!!
