Good luck at the races. I don't want a debate but I've heard B&M Original Trick Shift is the best lubrication for the Paxton's. Non Synthetic only

All I can say today is that every performance Studebaker needs a 4.56:1 twin track. Wow what a hoot! Tracked up to 5500- 6000 rpm really quickly in first gear.

I now need to find out my speed. Does anyone have any idea how many teeth I require for the speedo pinion gear? Going out with the GPS so I know how fast I'm going and to heat up that differential.

I seem to remember that you have a Powershift, if so the lowest ratio shown in the Speedometer gear Chart in the Stude. Chassis Parts Catalog Pg.478, is the 4.09 with 6.70X15 Tires, using a 7 tooth drive gear and a 21 tooth Pinion gear 1544763. It would take about a 23 or 24 tooth pinion for 4.54 which does not seem to be available.

If there are no gears available, they make reducers/overdrive adapters that fit between the trans case and speedo drive. Figure out how much you are off from the actual with the GPS, calculate the ratio and buy the adapter. Ebay has a ton.

A followup to StudeRich's reply regarding the speedo drive pinion, the Avanti parts manual lists a 23 tooth pinion, part no.1547614 for the 4.55 rear axle with a 7 tooth drive gear. However, the drive gear in your tranny will be an 8 tooth one, so that would require a min.24-25 tooth pinion. I doubt if these are available, and changing the drive gear to 7 tooth is a lot of work. Sweetolbob's solution seems the best way to go.

I am not sure which gear drive I have. I am running a powershift in my Hawk, they are the same in the Avanti, so why is mine a 8 tooth and not the 7 tooth? You guys have lost me. I think the best solution for this is to buy the highest tooth I can find and find a reducer to match the discrepancy... Looks like the reducers on Ebay give different multipliers to for reduction.

I am wondering if the powershift is similar to a powerglide. Are they one in the same? This site has pinion gears for older powerglides: http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm. I tried to find a old pinion gear for a 3.31:1 ratio that I had but could not find it. I wanted to take a few measurements off the gear... this site lists 24.25 tooth gears with a .865 head. I called Studebaker International today but did not get a call back on my inquiry. I give them a call tomorrow once again and give this website guy a call as well.

BTW WCP : I changed my Supercharger oil in maybe 10 minutes, great Idea! thanks.

Allen, glad to hear that the Hawk is ready to roll. Unfortunately I had to pull the plug on my plans and opt out of attending the drags. A decision I regret already; I was looking forward to seeing everyone and covering the event for Turning Wheels. But life just gets in the way sometimes! Hopefully things will work out for me to attend next year's.

Bummer Matt, I was looking forward to seeing you and your eloquent way that you write articles for Turning Wheels. Your going to miss one h@ll of a tailgate party as well. Make sure you attend next year's event.

With respect to Powershifts, R/A ratios of 3.73 and down, the drive gear is 8 tooth, and for 4.09 and up the tooth count is 7. This difference in speedo drive pinion gear is identified by the color of the ID plate, with the lower ratios being green and the higher ratios red. The problem with pinion high tooth counts is that the tooth becomes very narrow and delicate for that diameter of pinion. That's the reason for changing to a lower tooth drive gear for high ratio axles.

Gotcha! My powershift has a green plate, signifying that I can only go with a 3.73 pinion gear without changing the gear drive to 7 tooth. Then I will need a reducer to get the speedo close. Does not look like it's going to happen before the Pure Stocks.

                      Thanks Allen

Allen , sounds like you've done OK getting your Hawk in order for the drags. I'm looking forward to seeing it make some passes!
I have a hand held gps from my boat that shows mph , if you'd like I can bring it.
Oh by the way digger dave is coming too .

I'm with you on that one,... Is Dave bringing a car? I sure hope he does - If he does, this really is going to be some event. I think we should expect the biggest turnout of Stude's ever. I think there is a Black '63 R2 Lark showing up as well from NY State as a first time entrant.

Looks like the long term weather is going to be the best in years for the event. I've still have a few more things I would like to do. I drained the differential oil yesterday and replaced the oil. I added 8oz of limited slip modifier so the twin trac will dis-engage. I noticed when I was breaking in the new gears and going up the Niagara escarpment on Appleby Line (It's really steep and winding) that the rear tires were squealing going around one of the hairpin turns even with 4oz of modifier.

Tomorrow night I am tuning the engine with my engine builder to see where I am at with fuel/air ratios. May be changing some jetting/metering and timing.

As for the GPS, Bob I have one that show MPH, but thanks for the offer. I called the speedometer people today and they suggested taking 3 speeds (40, 50, 60 MPH ) with a vehicle with a known good speedo and then record my speeds. They will custom make a reducer for my car, $89 plus shipping. Unfortunately it is not going to be done in time for this years race.

Allen , no I don't think that Dave is bringing a car.
I do know that he and Dennis are meeting for breakfast on friday before heading out.
I would use your GPS insead of another car to get your speeds for that company....much more acurate I would think. I've always done that on any of my cars before changing gearing.
Drive safe and see you there early friday.

Allen- I have really enjoyed following this thread and living vicariously through your posts. Thanks for sharing, and best of luck! Maybe next year...

My GPS has among all it's stats a 'Max. Speed' window. Mine was at 118 from my 2000 Continental for a long time. Currently the Max shows 348 MPH. I got that by powering it up on a plane on the way to Florida

If yours has that, might be fun to clear ir and see what your fastest time of the meet is.
