  • Master cylinders

Hi all, Can anybody tell me if there is a compatable (interchangable) master cylinder to replace the one in a 1939 Commander. Thanks for the help.

Jim- I purchased a brand new master cylinder for my 1940 Champion from Carquest recently. They had the correct one in stock on the shelf!! I'm certain the same master cylinder was used by several cars other than Studebaker. Try Carquest via application. If you have no luck there, let me know. I have many rebuidable cores.

You can buy a new master cylinder, p/n 198526, from many of the Stude parts vendors. Current price is $200-$250. These fit most 1935-40 Dictators, Commanders, and Presidents, as well as '37-'39 Coupe Express and '41-'48 M5 trucks.
        Stephen Allen has them:
        http://www.mystudebaker.com/cats/stu...r_cyls_rel.htm

You should also be able to find a rebuildable used one pretty cheaply. The S-379 kit of rubber parts, piston, and spring is only about $22. Or, you can have your old one re-sleeved if it's pitted, probably cheaper than new. See http://www.whitepost.com/

You do have a parts catalog and shop manual, we hope. And a Studebaker International catalog? See http://www.studebaker-intl.com. Their complete catalog is online in PDF form, as well. Click the ORDERS button and scroll to the bottom of the page. Your parts are on page 167.

Jim- Just spoke with the local NAPA here and they have your master cylinder on the shelf for $77.97 plus tax. For your information, it is United Brand #2796. No need to spend $200+ dollars with one of the vendors, even tho I do advocate buying from them as often as possible. In this case it'd be foolish to spend that much more money on a readily available service part like this. Good luck.

Never dreamed that they'd have a 1939 Master Cylinder in stock, the later ones are common though.

Heck, Carquest can even cross many OEM Studebaker part numbers to theirs! All I do is ask and, if the parts guys are even partially competent, you'll be amazed at what is still available just down the street at your friendly neighborhood NAPA or Carquest.

I know they stock or can get quite a few, but I thought the 1939 master cylinder was not one of them. My prewar parts memory is limited, but I thought the early MC was as hard to find as prewar wheel cylinders. Glad to see I was wrong.
