Forgive my ignorance as an Australian, but is there still a 'separation" so to speak with the former Confederate States and the rest of the US - at least the non-Confederate states?

I get the impression that there are "two" Americas?

There are many "America's", North and South; East and West; urban and rural; black, white, Latina and Asian; smart and dumb; thin and fat; tall and short; old and young, etc.

Yes, after 140 years some are still fighting the war and American society is still suffering from the vestiges of slavery. This is probably not a topic for this discussion board, however.

It's just a long running joke nowadays John. We lost the war and we know it. It' just aheritage thing that we southerners don't want to forget. Matthew and I are members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. An organization dedicated to Honoring the memory of our confederate ancestors. NT

Up until about 25 years ago there was still a home for Confederate widows here in Richmond, but when they got down to about 7 or 8 ladies they shut it down and moved them all to a nursing home. I heard about 6 months ago the last know Civil War widow had passed away, but then I think one turned up in Missouri or Arkansas. Both cases involved women in their early 20's marrying Confederate veterns in their 80's, mostly for monetary reasons.

Some folks around here still refer to it as the war of Northern aggression. Just to keep this Studebaker related, remember that the brothers provided caisons and wagons to the U.S. Army.

However, there is a Studebaker topic here. In the 35 years that I have been a member of SDC, I have had the good fortune to meet (personally and/or on line) hundreds of members from all over the USA, as well as some international members. It's interesting to hear from our worldwide members who post here on the Forum.

The SDC is really a very diverse and interesting group. We have members from all walks of life, with a wide spectrum of social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds. I have made many great friends that I would never had known were it not for our Studebakers. We certainly don't all agree on much (as we often see on the Studebaker Newsgroup), but we do share one interest, and never fail to have a great time when we get together.

It's encouraging to see that we have some younger members like Matthew who will help keep the SDC going in the future.
