  • Need a gas gauge meter

    I'm having my '40s gas tank cleaned and coated. It turns out that the meter that screws on the top of the tank is bad. (The meter that reads how much gas is in the tank) I need a new one. Does anybody have one or know where I can find one? Or even the part number??

    I'm not sure if this is the one you need...but it is the only '40 I've seen lately.

      Chris you need gas tank sending unit Studebaker part #196880 fits G and 2G in other words 1939 and 1940 Champion only.

        The one at auction seems to be for Commander or President. Too bad, would be just what you need if it were for a Champion.

          I think you will just have to improvise on one that old Chris. there are 6 Volt universal standard 5 screw Fuel Sending Units available for Jeeps and other independent Co's with the same OHM rating. You need the original to match and bend the length and shape of the float rod on the new one to it.

          The NEW Repro 664967 Studebaker M Series Truck sender should be long enough to bend and or cut to fit also.

            Rich's suggestion is a good one and basically that is what I did on my 41 Champion recently when its sender went bad. I shortened the float arm on a truck unit I had in stock the proper amount and soldered it back together.

              Would the repop one work with a 12v system if I shortened it? The electrical system was converted before I got it.

                No it won't, just buy the 12V '56-'64 Truck sender.

                  Chris, if the car is now 12 volt and the original dash gauge is still being used there has to be a voltage reducer in the system in order for a 6 volt tank unit to work with the original gauge. A 12 volt tank sender will not work with the original dash gauge. I used a Runz voltage reducer on my 41 in order to retain my original dash gauge while using a 12 volt system and retained the 6 volt tank unit.
