  • What is it?

    I just bought a 1948 jeepster with a studebaker engine in it, but I do not know the year or kind of engine it is. The serial # on the block is ST5-92454. If anyone knows anything about this engine please let me know. Thanks.

    I think you are looking at a casting number. The engine number is stamped on the block at the front near the valley cover as shown in the white circle on the engine in this picture.

        The engine I have is an inline 6. The location of the number is etched on a lip that protrudes off of the block just below the head.

                I've heard that those swaps were pretty common many years ago. There used to be an old Jeep station wagon about 15 miles from here that had a Stude OHV 6. I read somewhere a while ago that the bellhousings would interchange between the Stude and Jeep engines, allowing you to use a Stude motor with a Jeep trans, or the other way around. That might mot be true, but who knows.

                I'm with Dwain. I'd LOVE to see pics of this! I've always liked those old Jeepsters. And with Stude power, that makes it that much cooler! [8D]

                    Ryan, That number isn't a Studebaker serial#. It might be an DMV ASSIGNED serial#, but it's not factory. If it's a flathead 6, chances are 99% that it's either a 170cu.in. or 185cu.in. variant of what we commonly refer to as a "Champion" engine. It carries that name because it debuted with the intro of the Champion car line in 1939. It was used in various fashion thru 1960 and from 61 thru 64, it still half-lived, revamped to OHV configuration, but still at 170cu.in.
                    Stude ALSO had a bigger flathead 6 that saw service from the late 30s thru 1960. There was no carry-on of it in OHV fashion.

                        Biggs is right. It's probably a Champion engine, because a Champion engin and its clutch/bellhousing assembly will mate right up with a Jeep using the T90 transmission. Transmission input shaft matches, too. Engine swaps don't get much easier than that.

                        Could be you have a Weasel engine. The military Weasel tracked vehicles were built by Studebaker, and used Champion engines, with a few detail differences, and I think they were given a different range of serial numbers. Lots of Weasel engines were hitting the surplus market in the mid-50's, which might explain the source of the engine to the original swapper.

                        Get some photos and post them here if you can.
