  • 62 stude indy pace car????

There is a 62 Stude on e-bay that claims to be a pace car for indy in 1962. Anyone know much about these. Seems to be hard to document. I wonder if the SNM could verify this car??? I have never seen one before, have you??

There has been much discussion on the Studebaker newsgroup about this car. The experts agree that the car is a fake. I believe it has too early of a SN to be legit.

I've seen a half dozen clones, just like the one on ebay.

Since I have owned a 69 Camero pace car and have a great interest in other pace cars, is there someone or some material that is available to verify a Stude pace car???? I like the way they look. Thanks

From Bob Palma on th3e Studebaker News group:

This cannot be one of the actual Pace Cars, or even a 500 Festival Car, because the Serial Number is 'way too low. The seller is full of
baloney, saying the actual Pace Car and Festival Car Serial Numbers are unknown; they certainly ARE!

I was part of the team that read 1962 V-8 Production Orders for hours
in 1992, culling the actual cars tagged for The Indianapolis 500 as
either Festival or Pace Cars. Check out the January 1993 Turning Wheels for everything you ever wanted to know about these cars, including ALL the actual serial numbers for the Pace Cars and the Festival Cars.

The lowest-number of the 34 Festival Cars is 62V27943; the highest
number is 62V30006. The next-to-last Festival Car was 62V29659, and was reportedly assigned to Indianapolis Mayor Alex Clark. 62V29659 was sold through Turning Wheels within the last year.

It is not known exactly which of two virtually identical 289/4-speed
cars was the actual Pace Car. It was either 62V38990 or 62V39027, both
built with several unique features May 10, 1962. One of the two paced
the race; the other was the backup car in case something terrible
happened. As far as I know, neither of those important cars has
surfaced to date. THAT would be a real find!

Again, you can read all about these in the January 1993 Turning Wheels
Feature Article on 1962 Daytona Convertible Indianapolis 500 cars...and
safely ignore any seller's remarks on E-Bay! BP

Thank You, It's to bad people try to misrepresent a piece of history. Although who knows, maybe this current owner beleives this is one, as it was represented when he bought it. Thanks

There was one at the Atlantic Zone Meet on Saturday that was done up with the decals also. I didn't check the VIN, perhaps Paul Johnson or someone else that was there longer than I was can shed some light on it.

I was under the impression, that Indianpolis Raceway had kept all of the pace cars, as I remember seeing a car museum online that had a large collection of pace cars.

It was the normal practice to give the Pace Car, or a replica such as a back up Pace Car or a Festival Car, to the winner of the Indy 500.
The Dodge Challenger, that was wrecked, (AFAIK) is at the dealership that Turner works at.

If I sold someone my 51 Coupe and told them it was the same model that Frank Mundy won three NASCAR races in that year, what they would hear is "this is THE car that won those races" because people remember what they wanted to hear.

If you're going to represent something as fact, there's no excuse for not doing your homework.

Not any more, Gary. Last year, wealthy local (Indianapolis) collector Steven Cage finally pried the car out of Eldon Palmer's death grip. It did, in fact, change hands! [:0]
If you can locate a periodical entitled MoPar Collectors Guide, there is a lengthy and interesting article by a Randy Holden about the wrecked Pace Car and how it was ultimately purchased by Steven Cage. I was sent a photocopy of the article, so I don't have the particulars as to issue or date, because they aren't on the photocopied pages I have in hand. BP

I wrote to the seller of the convertible explaining that the Studebaker build records are at the SNM and that his car is not the Pace Car. He replied to me with a thanks for the information.

The seller, with a reassuring (0) feedback rating, did post all the questions he's received on this "Pace Car" including Gary's. As a legit seller on eBay I hate seeing stuff like this. Hopefully the buyer will be content with a nice Stude convertible with a bunch of fake decals applied to it.
