  • R3 iron exhaust headers

    Greetings, All,

Just noticed a pair of R3 iron exhaust headers recenetly sold on eBay for $500 and Lionel Stone still advertises them in Turning Wheels for $375. Is there any differences in OEM and Lionel's supposedly made from the same molds, or was this buyer getting something special?

    thnx, jv.

Yes, the original ones did not have all the casting flash inside like the repros.

If I recall correctly, the original R-3 manifolds were right and left specific, with the O.E. passenger side manifold having a cast-in alternator mount.
The repops (I have a set), consist of two of the drivers side manifolds, and require a seperate bracket bolted to the cyl. head to mount the alternator. Really a minor, and not easily noticed detail.

I have a set that was on a Champ trucks V8 , that have to be at least 15 years old, that are the same left and right and the alternator mounted to head bolts with studs protruding from the heads of the bolts.
So when did the repos first appear??

You guys are confusing the issue here, it's not when did they change! Avantis used the same Left/Right because they do not mount the Alternator on the manifold. Lark/Hawk use the one with the built-in mounting bracket bosses with threaded holes.

I do not remember if Stu-V-Products Co. ever produced any manifolds from the dies from Paxton Products Div. of Stude. I think they did, many years before Lionel Stone got the dies. The quality of the work that the casting Co. does now, seems to be way less than the original Paxton ones, and the Lark/Hawk R/H one is no longer manufactured.

Thanks for the info, StudeRich. Very minor point of clarification - iron castings are made in molds, not in dies. thnx, jv.

                        Hi guys,
the exhaustheaders for Avanti powered cars are universal and do both sides with no mount for the altenator, as Avanti powered cars do not mount the altenator from the exhaust manifold.

I have seen a set of those manifold made by Studebaker that did have the altenator mount cast with the header, but these are extremely rare, and I doubt that they are a part that you would reasonably expect to find.

So Studebaker did make both types, but the latter is an odd bod Studebaker part.

                        Regards
                        Greg

This is the one with alternator mounts.

                            The Avanti part book says
                            1563228 MANIFOLD, right, exhaust-exhaust header-special order. R1, R2,
                            1559213 MANIFOLD, left, exhaust-exhaust header-special order. R1, R2,

                            and
                            1559213 MANIFOLD, - R3, R4, left/right.

                            Is this 1563228?
