  • New Guy new Car plz help

I am buying a 49 stude champion 4 dr. in a couple days. How collectable are they? (4 door cars are not normally as collectable as 2 door) how hard is it to find parts.
It's in really good shape. It runs, it stops, not much rust, great price.
Hope to be talking with you guys more often.

By the way i'm in Ohio

    Thanks

Hi Marty, and welcome. My very first car was a '49 Studebaker waaay back in 1956. Now, after 51 years of fooling around with all the "others", I just recently (last week) came back and bought me a '62 Studebaker Hawk.

To directly respond to your question of "collectability", I look at it this way.....ALL Studes are "collectable", as there will never ever be a "new" Studebaker manufactured again.

Furthermore, whereever you go with your Stude, whether it be to a local car show, or just some burger joint for a weekend cruisin, you won't likely find any others there like yours. To me, that sort of distinction and 'uniqueness' is something that not even "Mastercard" can provide, heh, heh, heh.

I say, definitely go for it. You won't regret it one bit.

Marty, just about anything from 1949 is collectible![:0] A 4-dr Studebaker of that vintage included. If your use of "Collectible" is a way of saying "how valuable", I'd say watching them sell on ebay ('49 Studes) would afford you some insight. For us to say: "Oh yeah, it's worth X amount of dollars." wouldn't be really accurate. It's worth what someone is willing to hand over for it.
If you're asking how sought after it is, you're assumption is fairly correct. We who can still remember these things in daily use tend to prefer the 2-doors for what WE percieve as their "sportier" appearance.
But the younger crowd (those concieved after the last Stude was built - in 1966) doesn't seem to have the same bias towards 4-door variants. This because 4-drs are what they've grown up with (in) for the most part.
Sounds like a nice car and if YOU'RE happy with it for what YOU paid for it then it's certainly a "good price".

        1960 Larkvertible V8
        1958 Provincial wagon
        1953 Commander coupe

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I will try to more directly answer your questions. All Studebakers are collectable. Four door sedans are on the bottom of the totem pole as far as sales price/value goes. Of course, you can have as much fun with a four door as with most any other model. Parts are more available than for most any other car of the same vintage. Join the Studebaker Drivers Club from this site and you will learn that there are many small and large vendors of new, used and reproduction parts. You will also receive an excellent monthly publication for your $19.95 new member membership fee. My father-in-law's first car and first new car was a 1949 Champion four door sedan. My wife's first car was a 1953 Champion four door sedan.

                    Marty,
Welcome to the Stude world. I really mean it.
I'm in agreement that all Studebakers are collectable. In reality, the 4-doors do not fetch a lot of money. My take on that is the enjoyment factor in owning such a car. And I know you'll enjoy driving it.
                    Best of luck.

As we enthusiasts get older 4 doors are not looking so bad. Many of my contemporaries are getting 4 doors as they are easier to get in and out of as well as more fun to cruise in with another couple.

I've gotta throw in with bob40, I don't find 4-doors any less of a car. Yeah, yeah, look at the evidence of the market. Well, market schmarket, if I like a particular car, that gives it value to me. If I can get it cheaper than something with less doors - such a deal![^]
