  • Castrol Syntec 20w/50

    I haven't found many places that stock, or can even order this, except for Pep Boys.

    I was in there this morning...they have it on sale this month in their oil change special...5 quarts and a filter.

    Here in NJ...that is $27.99

    Saves me a couple o' bucks per quart...and you get a filter.

    I have no connection to Pep Boys, wanted to pass on if someone want to save a little...

    Make sure the oil bottle say "Classic car formula" on it, as only the Syntec 20w50 "Classic car formula" has higher levels of zinc (ZDDP). I've looked for the actual weight % for the Castrol but can't find it. Valvoline VR-1 20w50 (street legal version) has published their zinc and phosphate numbers and they are right in line with the proper range recommended for our older flat-tappet engines. I suspect the Castrol is OK if you want a synthetic just double check the label. Here's the Castrol product sheet for the syntec 20w50

      NAPA is the other place that I have found that regularly carries Castrol 20W50 Syntec for "classic" cars. But not in Canada![B)]

          My local FLAPS carries VR-! 20W50 for even a &gt;&gt;really good&lt;&lt; regular price for Canada. I was concerned about the WEIGHT of the oil, though. Not too thick? Geez, I'm thinking I should install a block heater in each of my Studebakers and use it before I turn the key.

            Several have mentioned they have wondered if an oil is too thick. I am a Petroleum Engineer, so let me try and clear up some common mistakes regarding motor oils. I am not trying to belittle anyone or lecture anyone, so please accept my comments in good faith as that is how I intent to offer them up.

            Multi-grade viscosity motor oils such as 5W30, 10W30, 15W40 or 20W50 behave like two seperate grade motor oils depending upon temperature. The lower number 5,10,15, or 20 represents how a motor oil will perform at cold temperatures. The lower the number the less viscous the oil, or in other words it is thinner and flows easier. If you live in the North perhaps a 10 grade or 5 grade (extreme North) for the 1st value in the multi-grade is what you should run.

            The second viscosity value the 30,40, or 50 represents the viscosity the oil behaves like when the engine is hot, it becomes more viscous or thicker. If your vehicle is getting some heavy duty service, towing, racing or just running AC in the deep South during the summer then the higher viscosity numbers will give you better lubrication and protection at higher temperatures. In simple terms a 20W50 behaves like a single grade 20 weight oil when cold and behaves like a single grade 50 weight when hot.

            The multi-grade oils do this with viscosity modifiers or additives to change the oil visosity dependent upon temperature. This is done primarily with the use of polymer additives. If the motor oil you like has adequate ZDDP (Zinc dithiophosphate) in it to protect older flat-tappet engines then pick the appropriate multi-grade for the conditions and climate you live in. Remember the motor oils with ZDDP are becoming more limited due to government regulations regarding emissions and catalyic convertors, so please check the many posts on this forum with ZDDP being discussed to find some of the brands and types with adequate ZDDP.

            If you have a favorite brand of multi-grade that you love and it doesn't have the right level of ZDDP or the manufacteur will not tell you the ZDDP content then just buy a bottle of ZDDP additive and add it when you change your motor oil. Several FLAPS sell it or you can purchase it from several of our Studebaker vendors for $9.99 per bottle.

              The Castrol Syntec 20W50 was one of the oils recommended by Bob Palma last year in the Cooperator In Turning Wheels as having sufficient ZDDP.

                At engine operating temps, the 20W50 is still more viscous that the originally specified 30W and will slow valve area draindown particularly at higher engine rpms.
