  • Ocean Bay Chapter visits Factory 5 Racing

On Saturday, Feb. 17, thirty members and guests of the Ocean Bay Chapter of SDC (Mass. and RI) made a visit to Factory Five Racing in Wareham, MA. Factory Five makes replicas of the Ford Cobra, and well as copies of the Daytona and Ford GT. Buy their kit, which includes fiberglass body, welded tube frame, interior, and accessories, add the engine and running gear from a '87-'04 Mustang GT 5.0, and you have everything you need to make a complete car.

We happened to hit the day when they had the annual "Valentine's Day Invasion and Mooch Fest" when about 20 of the kit builders showed up with their open cars, in spite of temperatures in the twenties and heavy salt on the roads. We got the complete tour of the production facilities with demonstrations of automated cutting of fiberglass, robot machining of molded parts, frame welding in precision jigs, and kitting of finished parts. They have taken great care to make a quality jig-welded frame and fiberglass body which fits.

While the car is clearly designed for the Ford 289/305 engine, there is certainly plenty of space for a Stude 289, especially since we saw cars with the latest Ford "modular V-8s". Just imagine a bored-out Stude 289 with a McCulloch/Paxton blower in one of these cars! It would be a 2000 lb rocket.

They also make a Daytona coupe version if you want a roof and windows:

If you really want to go extreme, the GT is the car for you!

I was impressed - these guys do a quality job at a reasonable price. Factory Five owner Davia Riha runs a great company and welcomed everyone with some superb give-ways and a free lunch. In case someone wants me to pick up a finished car at the factory and drive it to your home, I might be easily persuaded. I live only 20 minutes away from them.
