  • March Madness Arizona Style...Many Pics

Today was the 16th annual March Madness Studebaker Meet in Arizona. The Grand Canyon and Southern Arizona Chapters of the SDC alternate hosting the event each year. The Southern Arizona Chapter hosted this year's event at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park in Tucson.

Hmm...what to do, what to do? Three Studebakers at our disposal and a show 100 miles away. We decided to get a sitter for the kids and make it a Studebaker Date Day with LuLu the wagon. It would be her first road trip with us and our longest Studebaker-powered drive yet. We alerted friends in Phoenix and Tucson to be on call in case we needed some help, then loaded up the lawn chairs and hit the road!

LuLu proved what a special wagon she is by effortlessly escorting us to our destination! We took a group picture using the camera's timer function and settled in for a day of Studebaker comraderie.

Jeff Jones brought his awesome orange truck. We know our son will be happy to hear it was there...it's his favorite!

This Commander appears to be the color that George (our '57 President Classic) was originally.

The Avanti Club was also well represented.

This was Tracy's mom's favorite car at the Meet today.

    A beautiful sky top Daytona.

Blue seemed to be the color of the day and was very well represented!

    Very nice '56 President.

We always enjoy seeing the trucks.

The Avanti owners had this great set-up for their meeting. The shade was probably much appreciated...it was a sunny 74 degrees today!

This car got a lot of attention as it drove in. All ages appeared to really enjoy it.

    Another sleek Avanti.

    Every Toyota's dream?

LuLu and her new friend, The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum's Desert Ark. Tracy's sister was at the show and made a comment about the two cars being alike except for the fact that LuLu is older than the Ark. We explained to her that they are actually both '60 models, but she persisted in saying that LuLu was older. "Look," she said, pointing to the side of each car. "LuLu has a VI and the Ark has an VIII...doesn't that mean that LuLu came first? You know, like Windows versions on the computer? The lower numbers come first." We couldn't fault her logic, but needless to say, we took a few minutes to educate her about Lark engines.

After the Meet, we decided to drive around town a little bit and let LuLu have a bit of an adventure. Our first stop...the ferris wheel at a neighborhood carnival!

Since we aren't that daring when it comes to rides that spin you around in circles, we took a few pictures and continued on our way.

    Thank you for the pictures.
What kind of bed is on the blue Champ pickup?
The first picture of Lulu with the ferris wheel is outstanding.
Today in Missouri it was raining and cold. Only one Sudebaker at our meeting today.
We are looking forward to the car show season starting over here.

John and Tracy, Great looking pix and meet. I've got my eye on a 60 Lark Wagon right now, but I'm waiting for the right time to pull the trigger. I've got a lot on my plate right now and I'm back to having 11 Studes at the house right now, fortunately, only 2 are outdoors. That will not draw too much attention. Your Lark find is a fabulous little car. I really love the wagons. Here's a picture of my next project wagon. I got the 259 to turn over, but not start yet. We'll see how it goes in the next month or so. Boy, now that I look at it, the front end on my wagon looks like a 4x4. I'm gonna have to get in there and cut those front springs.! ! !

RE: Bed on Champ pickup. The fenders are Dodge. Looks like the bed sides are Studebaker. Boy, that'll really confuse someone with just a [u]little</u> knowledge of Champ trucks![]

Nice pics, you guys, but you are killing those of us in cold winter climates.

But it looks like a great day with a terrific selection of Studes.

As the brochure said in 1960, "You'll love that Lark!" (Of course, that was overprinted above a yellow convertible, but we'll overlook that...[}]) BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

                        Ayn Rand:
"You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality."

                        G. K. Chesterton: This triangle of truisms, of father, mother, and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilizations which disregard it.

It's a Studebaker bed with Dodge fender. This truck has a large number of subtle mods done to it. It is worth a photo feature showing them and the outstanding workmanship.

Is that on a wagon frame, bridegaurd?
