1925 Duplex Phaeton

Tad Burness' syndicated drawing and comments of the 1925 Duplex Phaeton sums it up very well why the Grand Canyon Chapter chose to use the Duplex Phaeton as its featured Studebaker in their International Meet literature:

Now that I re-read this, is your statement supposed to be in the form of a question? As in how the engineers at Studebaker could ever allow two-wheel brakes for such a large engine?

The black one looks outstanding.
The maroon one with Ohio plate looks like the one I took a picture of in South Bend at an International Meet in the mid '80's. The setting was downtown and extremely hot that day. If this is the same car, I used my picture of it as the model for the 2011 International Meet T-shirt.

It was meant as an exclamation, hence the exclamation point at the end. I know that these parameters were stated. I was just "voicing" surprise that that large of a car with that big of an engine would be standard with two wheel brakes when four wheel brakes were available for the car.

This is our '26 EP Big Six. We have documentation that it actually severed as a sheriff's car. It was put into service by Sheriff A. J. Larsen in Beadle County South Dakota (Huron) in September of 1926. A. J. was succeeded in office by his wife, Lydia Larsen, after that fall's general election as you could only be sheriff for 2 two year terms. Mrs. Larsen was the first elected woman sheriff in South Dakota.



Mr. A. J. Larsen, sheriff



P.T. Driscoll, Roy Shea, Patrick Hanley, A.J Larsen and unknown. These three held up the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Huron on July 8, 1927 and made off with about $25,000. They were later captured in Minneapolis by the Larsen's. After conviction all three received an enjoyable ride from Huron to the state pen in Sioux Falls in the back seat of the '26. Please note the car in the background of the photo.
