Same here, always wanted one. The only one I ever saw anywhere that we went was at a collectible auction, it was a Pierce Arrow and went for TWENTY something THOUSAND. So- -I just keep wishing. John

Well... Remember, these were clay and being from the '40s, '50s, etc. if they weren't properly stored, or exposed to moisture, they would crack and fall apart. Or, if it was a prototype that was to be kept a secret or something, Studebaker could have destroyed it. There are a few small clay models on display at the SNM, a 1940, and a 1952 Champion, and one other, but I forget what it is of. I really do wish somebody would fix the bumper on the clay of the '40 though, if you have ever seen it, the front bumpers glue on the right side broke off with age, so the bumper is just hanging by the left side! It would only take a few drops of super glue to fix, but who knows...[V] The ones I would like to know what happoned to are the full size clay models, I've never seen one.[?]

There are a couple on display in the SNM. Here's one of the '52 hardtop, in two-tone green:



It was displayed opposite a full-size version of the real thing!



There was also a 1/8-scale Avanti concept clay, part of the Loewy portion of the exhibit:



Maybe they've got more stashed somewhere?

Saw that Texas 52 Hardtop at Pate and the Austin Tx national meet in 1998. He had it for sale at the National meet for $12,000 beautiful car.

Chris this is a fantastic piece for us history nuts.

If you look at the 6th picture down, you will see two men in suits. These are none other than than Raymond Loewy on the right and Virgil Exner on the left. IMHO these two represent 2/3's of the design triumverant of the late 30's to 60's. Missing is Harly Earle. Exner is the only one to have worked for both Loewy and Earle. He came to the Loewy Studios in the late 30's after serving as the chief designer for the Pontiac division under Earle. His first assignment was the design onf the front end of the 39 Studebaker.

Actually, yes. Only I'm not sure if they do the small models anymore. I know they still build full size clay models.
