  • South Bend Official Foundry Tour Date Announced

On Saturday Noverber 28, join myself and a small car group for what will probably be the last offocial tour of Studebakers Building #85, the Foundry. We will meet at the foundry parking lot saturday morning around 9:30 AM South Bend time. I will be there along with Ed George and others. Drive your Studebaker so you can get past the gate house![] If you have never been in the foundry, or any studebaker building for that matter, it is really worth it. Building #85 even gives SASCO no justice, it's just HUGE! Also, I would advise you to bring a resealible container of some sort if you want some of the core sand, and/or a brick. Bricks are to be had as a casting room wall has partially been knocked down for storage. (Interior, done on pourpose. Ive seen it, the wall isnt a hazzard) We will also try to see the second floor, turn around and go below ground in the tunnels. If you want to see the tunnels, I would advise bringing rubber boots, maybe. I havent seen them and they sometimes have water in them I guess, nothing too extreme though, maybe 6" max where we are going. Bring a camera and above all, be safe and have fun. Emphasis on safety. Ive been in there since they cleaned alot of the misc. junk out, and Ill be the first to say that the aisle ways are perfectly clear, but still, it was built in 1928 so still watch yourself. It is really a place worth seeing! I hope to see ya there! Again, saturday november 28th at 9:30 AM, foundry parking lot. Any questions, please post them below and I will answer them. GO STUDEBAKER!!!

Wish I could be there, Chris. Sadly, I'm just a wee bit too far West. Take lots of pictures for me, okay? By the by, who's conducting the tour?

I can't think of anything I would rather do than explore the foundry on the 28th. However, I will not be able to drive either of my Studes by then from Central Michigan.

Would it be possible for someone like me to hook-up with the tour if I were drive a newer brand X down and ride in with someone?

Happy to pay for gas, buy lunch or liquid refreshments to join up.

Why cant you drive a Studebaker then, Bob? Do your Studebakers suffer from high-blood pressure due to the road salt? [8D]

I was kidding about the only studebaker part. You could probably hitch a ride with somebody or meet us there. Last time, it was just a convoy of classic car and only 3 were studes, of about 10! So it dosent really matter. Except all but possibly a neighbor-? and I will be coming from west and direcly to the foundry. Ill make a few phone calls for you anyway. Thanks! By the way, refreshments and that kind of stuff would be great.

Snow should hold off, shoot, its supposed to be in the 60s this saturday! Indian summer. Usually it dosent get too bad until early december, but still bring some warmer clothing and coats.

Naw!! Got 'em on Caduet and Levitra so it's difficult to get them to leave the pole barn for long. In reality, Interior is half out of the 54 and I don't know if the 83's new drive train will be sorted out by then.

Chris, I appreciate the effort so I'll drive the Impala down and crash the party.
